If movies define fashion, the latest fashionable (or may I say the only bling) headphones in the market were sported by Ranbir Kapoor in his latest movie Wake up Sid. And they are now available in stores. Skull Candy offers a Low Rider 40 mm neodynamic magnetic speaker-based headphone with a wide frequency range of 18 Hz to 20 kHz and it ships in multiple colours. For a price of Rs 1,800, these did not appeal to any one I know in the middle-age group. Though the performance is nice and they are comfortable to wear—the Skulls are a bit of a downer if you are not a kid or Ranbir Kapoor fan. On higher bass I felt the sound was breaking up a bit, but as I said, this is not for the aficionado, but more for a kid who wants to look cool. Skull Candy plans to launch more models soon.

Some of the early adopters got their Kindles through their relatives abroad or picked one up on a trip abroad, but its wireless would not work in India. The only way to get the ebooks was to synchronise it with your PC. As Kindle became the hottest selling ebook reader last year, people started complaining about it not being available outside the US. Others complained that its black-and-white screen was a turn off. But its screen is very much like paper, and its e-ink screen or e-paper is much more comfortable to read as compared to coloured LCD screens. And, with over 350,000 books, access to online newspapers, blogs and magazines, this is a device that’ll keep up with your reading—however, no Indian newspaper is currently available on Kindle. An international edition was finally launched, with a GSM Sim card and a bundled data package so you won’t need to pay extra for mobile connectivity. Yes, even in India (as its site claims). Though it has 3G built in, the Indian version currently works only on GPRS, thus book downloads may take a long time. I am waiting for my piece to tell you the truth about it. At just over 1/3rd of an inch thickness and 300 gram, it has the feel of a book. The Kindle 2 can hold up to 1,500 books, and has a battery life of two to ten days. It also has a ‘read to me’ feature. The international version is 8 x5.3 x 0.36 inch in size.

Just when you thought that the Android wars were taking over and Microsoft had taken a back seat, HTC announced Touch 2, which is the first phone available in India with Windows Mobile 6.5. Touch 2 also has a better fingertip experience and the upgraded TouchFlo interface is more responsive. A dedicated zoom bar let’s you browse much better. Touch 2 also has an in-built GPS that can be used along with Google Maps. It is only available with RCom GSM, but soon it should be available with other networks too. The phone weighs 110 gram and has a large 2.8 inch TFT screen. Though a quad band phone, it was not clear if this is a 3G phone or not. Featuring up to four hours of talk time, and five days of standby time, this is a phone only for people who want the latest. Though it is the latest phone, it doesn’t have an accelerometer.

The new Sound Dock 10 has been designed for iPods and works with iPhones too. It is compatible with any click-wheel iPod, iPod Touch, iPhone 3G and the soon-to-arrive-in-India iPhone 3GS. It works directly with these devices to play the music stored on them, in a brilliant fashion. This new Sound Dock has an auxiliary input, that allows you to connect any mp3 player with it, and it also has a video out so you can directly hook it up the your TV and watch podcasts or videos stored on your iPod. Earlier versions of the dock are still on sale, but keeping in mind its sound quality, it is a worth buying.
