In a statement issued by NDTV on Open magazine’s cover story, The X-Tapes, which carried, among others, transcripts of conversations between Barkha Dutt and Niira Radia, the television channel included comments by Open’s editor Manu Joseph. What was not mentioned in NDTV’s statement was that Manu Joseph’s comments were extracted from an SMS he had sent to Barkha Dutt as a reply to her message that someone in Open was running a “smear campaign” against her. His message (which begins with, “That’s not true”) is in reply to her accusation. The editor of the magazine firmly stands by the story, and to say that he has admitted to a “distortion in the story’s caption” is a gross distortion in itself. Also, he had used the word “unremarkable” to describe her transcripts, only in the context of Barkha Dutt’s claim that there was a smear campaign against her.
The NDTV statement further objects to “the clear misrepresentation of conversations between Barkha Dutt and Ms Niira Radia, that took place in May 2009.”
Open maintains that there was no misrepresentation. The conversations were carried as they appeared in the recordings. NDTV does not deny that these conversations had taken place.
The NDTV statement goes on to say, “NDTV believes the magazine should first verify and corroborate facts before participating in a defamatory smear campaign. These are unsubstantiated, baseless and defamatory allegations and we reserve the right to take appropriate action.”
Open magazine is sure of its content, which is why it decided to run the story. Open is one of the most respected magazines in the country, it has among its staff some of the finest journalists in the country and it has no interest in participating in any smear campaign against a well-known journalist. The cover story is self-evident and anybody who has read it can see very clearly that there have been no “unsubstantiated, baseless or defamatory” allegations.

Great job Open! Keep up the good work. In this desert of yellow drivel journalism, Open is truly the oasis of hope for Indian readers.

Rajmohan, the open way would be to put the chain of email communications with routing details out in the open for readers to read.

Whatever NDTV say, Barkha dutt is now reduced to a Go-between or a Power Broker. Better she join Congress or DMK

Oh, What spin from NDTV to protect Ms Dutt. Would put Fox News to shame.
Well done Open, keep it up!

I never heard of your magazine until this story broke. Like many things in life, I regret not discovering your magazine earlier. I am very proud of you and your team. What you have published, no other mainstream publication did. It took guts and daring. Salute to you. When Indian officials traveling abroad, claim India has a 'free press', they were referring to folks like you and your team.
Keep the flame burning.
DON'T BE COWED DOWN BY THREATS.

Reasonable rational statement. NDTV's accusations sounded unnecessarily strident and personal.

Radia took delivery of her new Jaguar as she claims. How much does a Jaguar cost? Lucky lady. Just connect X with Y and do some gossip - presto you get a new Jaguar !! Not bad.

Awesome job, Manu and team. it was high time someone had the guts to expose the journalist-fixers-corporation-government nexus. more power to you guys

I have heard all the tapes and everything is out in the open. Nobody is forcing us to believe anything, it is all pretty evident. The act of cover-up by NDTV and the media blackout is not helping the TV channel and its celebrity journo.
Don't let anyone deter you guys from doing a great job. NDTV or such do not have a copyright on news. I didn't see any defamation. However, NDTV's response seems mismatched. Nevertheless, kudos. We the people need to know how the destiny of our nation is shaped, even if it is done behind closed doors and in guarded telephone conversations. It affects me, and I have an interest in knowing this. Thank you for letting me.

After listening to the tapes and going through the transcript, only one conclusion can be drawn. Barkha Dutt should either clearly state that it is not her on the tape or admit that she was a "go between" at the least; when Raja was being inducted into the union cabinet. She is clearly being heard comparing notes; strategising & taking directions from a corporate lobbyist. Now being a lobbyist is not wrong in itself neither is there anything illegal in being a journalist who is talking to a lobbyist. Questionable thing is being a lobbyist and posing as a journalist. Obviously Barkha is very sure of her professional journalistic ethics in her dealings with Niira Radia and sees nothing wrong in it. I fail to understand how is then this public outing of her conversation; "defamatory" ! She should be " proud" of it!!!!

All these NDTV and CNN-IBN and Star TV people and almost all the newspapers are completeltely biased in favour of the pseudo secular, heavily statist congress and its allies. Only the Pioneer and now your magazine have some spine and guts and integrity.

Shame to this woman who has pretended, for so many years, to be a journalist seeking the truth. Would like to see her moderating a debate on her situation.

If Barkha Dutt has any self respect she will resign. I have lost my respect for her. Vir Sanghvi was silent in his column in today's Hindustan Times. Do they think it is unimportant? NDTV's smug obfuscation and media silence is a pathetic response to this shocking expose. Thanks Open magazine for bringing this to our attention.

I have heard the conversations between Radia and many journalists (Barkha, Vir, and Suhel). I do not believe that any of these three "journalists" were doing journalism while talking to Radia. For example, Suhel promises to talk to Pranab (assuming he is talking about Pranab Mukherjee) about something that seems to be furthering Radia's interests. Many headlines are there about Vir plotting a "convenient" story. Barkha sounds so concerned to ensure something...
I have also read the defense of Barkha and Vir. They are putting forth lame excuses. Meeting a lobbyist to get information is not what they were doing. They were openly assisting Radia in her agenda, so was Suhel Seth (who, I now believe, had put a brave face on Times Now show).
These journalists will of course deny any hobnobbing on their part. But they must not take people's capability to see through their charade for granted. Alright, we were naive, we believed in you and your credentials. But now that we have heard what you did...please...do not add salt to injury by offering lame excuses.

I love the open mag. Other mainstream media has totally ignored this story. Lots of respect to you , sir.

It was a great job done by Manu and his team. Required guts and courage to carry the tapes. NDTVs statement itself was full of so many loopholes. Maybe the management did not hear the tapes on your website before forwarding the letter to OPEN.
Many of us have been silent spectators, including my friends in other media houses. But its a fact that every word written in the transcript is what was on the tapes (on open website), so where is the question of twisting facts.. You must send a copy of tapes on a usb drive to Mr Roy and let him hear the tapes. He could be playing another PM being a silent spectator.

I am sure you will not be cowed down by threats...if there is something more on the corporate honchos..please put it out...All the best

NDTV's statement is like a confession and request not to disturb their so called celebrity anchor BARKHA. Shame on you, Barkha. I hope the public will man handled her, if a chance will get.

All these media wallas are dalal's, brokering between Politicians and Corporates.
Corporates are getting their people in key ministry positions to work for them.
NDTV must throw out Barkhaa Dutt to save its reputation or else it will also go down with her.
It seems this is a standard practice of journalists to engage in power brokering that explains why other big media houses have mot picked up this story.

The exposure is a rude shock and cannot explain in words. We the Public lost hope in the MEDIA as we were in a sort of worshipping these icons,Prannoy,Vir and Burkha. We will not believe even our shadow now.

Dear Open,
you have done a great service to the nation by exposing the true face of some Gomukha Vyaghras of this country. The persons exposed by you have long been misleading a part of the population of this country. And, hopefully now those people will make better choices.

Barkha Dutt has begun to think that she is god's own shit. It usually happens to people like her. " more gas and less substance"
No one could conclude from the transcript of the Barkha Dutt teleconversation that she was being smeared. But a reader would indeed conclude that she is a willing participant in back-channel influence-peddling, and that - as Open possibly intended to demonstrate - the tapes together say something about how the nation's business is done in New Delhi.
NDTV's statement, however, should be treated as a routine and predictable corporate response of the kind that will assuage the anxieties of viewers partial to that channel.
IT IS INDEED SHAMEFUL ON BARKHA'S PART FOR HER ROLE IN THESE TAPES.SHE SHOULD TENDER APOLOGY UNCONDITIONALLY TO THE NATION.THIS SHOWS SEUDO SECULAR FACE OF HER.
Barkha has admitted that the transcripts are bona fide. As for her claim that she was only trying to pursue information as a journalist, it is a weak defence. There are too many giveaway lines in her talk with Nira Raadia, about promising to speak to X or Y in Congress. Also, at one point, Nira says 'choice of candidate we leave to YOU (emphasis added)". Who is YOU? Barkha is cabinet maker? Or is 'YOU' the Congress side of the negotiations? If Nira, who knows who has what authority in Delhi surely, calls Barkha 'you' while referring to the Congress Party, then she is their authorised negotiatior. It so happens that publicly she claims to be a neutral journalist. How NDTV can retain her services after this is a mystery, unless it is also party to all this wheeling dealing and cash-for-cabinet games with Rs 176,000 crore of people's money being stolen by this network of crooks who think "janata chootiya hai".
Some sheen has been taken off from Barkha Dutt, denting her image as one of the best TV journalist. That some one like her is one of India's best is in itself a telling comment on TV Journalism in India and especially NDTV which thrives on its embedded relationship with the ruling party in power.

When politicians, bureaucrats indulge in similar situations like Barkha Dutt & Vir Sanghvi, the media pounces on them on impropriety, corruption etc without investigating properly, collecting evidence & hearing it out from them. Though this media trial required to keep a check on the corrupt politicians & bureaucrats, now who will pound on Barkha & Vir. Now the citizens of our country should know how and why Barkha was bestowed with State award which she definitely not deserved it like many other undeserving people. If she has any shame left in her, she should apologise to the nation and return back the State award. We all know NDTV is pro congress / govt. by not investigating or disseminating scams and the role of its promoter Prannoy is well known in the infamous dispute with Prasar Bharati two decades ago.

There can be absolutely no mistaking the intent in these conversations that these journalists now claim was a 'regular part' of their duties. Niira clearly was passing on messages and these people acted as carriers. I'm not so sure this was to help follow up on an emerging story....its more like 'help create the story'. This is one piece of journalism that would have required hardly any research, especially when you're the one running the sham with other shammers. Barkha Dutt, i am truly ashamed of being a fan. And i extend this to all the other who have been exposed. Great work Open; i hasten to add that this is not extraordinary journalism - this is the duty of journalism. Thanks for upholding it.

Not amazed why none of the big media in India is carrying or even opening their mouth about this expose.
Hats off to Open for really opening up this highly celebrated Journalists and how they go behind creating stories and fooling around with public for their own self interest which is beyond what a laymen will think could be.
I think NDTV has removed the so called response to open from their main site already.
I think open should follow up on this with more clear exposes.

But you need to persue to get these journalists b Dutt and V sanghvi, prosecuted and their licence cancelled for lobbying for the corporates. Now that the CBI has submitted an affidavit which clearly states that there are close to 6000 conversations, and did not refute the veracity of the tapes put out in the OPEN by OPEN Magazine; you may like to put it on ur website for benefit of NDTV as they may have missed the happenings at SC today.
And we the readers of OPEN, me being a new one, would look forward to see and hear more in the days to come... Keep it up...
Incidentally, i came across a tweet of Barkha when her name came up in April.. She tweeted, "have been told by govt officials - those papers not official/CBI at all- apparently from whispers in the corridors! BIZARRE!".....http://twitter.com/BDUTT/status/13058784671
The Tweet looks so BIZARRE now.... Pls do remind the world what Barkha said in April too...

Great work Manu and the Open Team
How can Vir and Barkha continue to be associated with Journalism after they ahve been exposed for what they really are, let them show the courage and the guts to leave their profession and become full time "dalals"/lobbyists,their rebuttals sound pathetic and if they think anybody is going to beleive it they have another think coming, their credibility is shredded, they may continue to be retained by their respective employers, but who is going to view/read them without contempt. You must also publish the transcripts of one of the biggest DALALS of them all Prabhu Chawla, it is a well known gfact inthe sleazy corridors of Power in Delhi where Mr Chawla comes from. Let's all build enough pressure fto hound these corrupt "journalists" from this one profession, especially since the mainstream Media is closing ranks, and "Journalism of Courage" etc is being given short shrift, in fact most of the senior jouranlists are full time "dalals" except they ahve not been caught on tape yet.You write and expose these seedy sleazy, and venal people.we will support you, I hope nobody leans on the owners The Goenkas to ask you to not pursue this to it's logical end.

1. OK. I believe that, all Barkha was doing was collecting information as a professional jurno. In that case, though she got so much news material, but why did she decided not to share it with the People of India, whose money is being looted and whose future was at stake.
2. Why, Barkha Dutt etc. are engaged in brokering power, where zillions of money are being looted. Are they doing it for money?
3. When Barkha with tears in her eyes and a misguided Kashmiri youth in her arms, who was supposed to be tortured by inhuman security forces, points her fingure to the State Machinary of India. For whom she is lobbying? Is it Pakistan or ISI? Did she get paid by the Pakistan / ISI, too?
We the People of India have the right to ask this, Barkha. And, you must answer.

Rajmohan,
Open has proved that there is still fair journalism left in India. I lost all hope of finding the truth about Indian politics. Politicians, bureaucrats, judiciary and the entire system is a failure. Atleast I wanted someone to show that we are a failure. Corruption behind the scenes and behaving like saviors of India is not what we people want.
Please do not bow down to any pressure. Keep you head held high.

Journalistic Blasphemy!!!!!
'Vir Barkha' has made me stop watching and visiting anything that has NDTV or HT attached to it. I was among their ardent readers and watchers. And their mulish silence, with cooperation from most of the media, is shouting out loudly that a cartel, does indeed exist, which clouds out and colours facts, distorting reality, before it reaches us.
Alas! I loved HT & NDTV. Not any more.... I just can't get myself to watch or read them in earnest anymore.
Good job to get the truth out. Keep it up. [To you and all the self respecting media people in general]
And to those that are silent, come clean…..speak the truth and clear the air. Don’t go our politician’s cruelly corrupt ways. Deviate, but we beg you, don’t be ‘Devious’. You form the foundation of public belief in democracy and freedom of expression. Please don’t let us down.

Firstly Kudos to Mr. Joseph for being able to not only expose the corrupt lobbyist or the politicians but also persons from his own journalistic fraternity. This is shocking how these two top journalist are lobbying and when you can jail the politicians it seems no action is being taken against these rogue journalist who have no moral ground to keep coming everyday on the channels and news papers reading news as hypocrites. They have no shame or moral responsibility. Only God will have to intervene now to stop this menace.

Well lobbying is not New ! I am not sure how many journalist work with integrity. Either they are bias because of the relationship or get paid, leaving apart the exceptions.
Involvement of icons like BD and VS is a shock. The question which comes to my mind is you can not trust the politicians and now know can not those journalists too. So it looks to be all illusion created for common people. All the debate argument and journalism is an eye wash.
Their is no meaning left to Integrity and Character.
I wonder if continue to be sold at every step...one way or the other.
Well done. NDTV has no defence and have reacted the way corrupt have reacted always-by prevarication and obfuscation- and have taken the defence the corrupt have always taken- that they were acting in the best interest of the people and the party. If this is not lobbying, and fixing, then taking bribes to build up a corpus to fight the next election is also legitimate. What a joke!
Shame on NDTV for blindly trying to shield BD!!
Anyone who can read the transcripts will know that they (BD and NR)were not chatting up to develop a story but were clearly trying to influence the constitution of the cabinet on behalf of their respective political partners(?!) Does NDTV think people are so dumb so as not to make out the difference?
The only thing that needs to be probed is whether the tapes are authentic...but then if it has been submitted in the SC by a lawyer (Prashant Bhushan) as evidence in a PIL, i really doubt they are not!
NDTV should carry out its own investigation into the matter and if found to be true, then it should have the guts to sack BD, irrespective of her past journalistic stature...the question is: will it bell the cat?
Also, IMHO, these tapes have been carefully timed so that the media pressure building on the govt on corruption is eased off, by deflecting the public's attention on the rot within the media itself and to destroy its credibility...but maybe the powers that be do not realise that not all journos are the same. The media should continue to hound the govt on CWG, 2G, Adarsh etc.

Firstly congratulations to Open media on going ahead and publishing this story and exposing sensationalistic "NEWS" channel. Though it is well-known that almost every new channel is in cahoots with some political party, this article clearly proves that true journalism is still alive.
It is still fresh in my memory the way Barkha ended per piece on Kargil "This is Barkha Duttt from bunker" now, once again, is true since she has lost her face in public and should be hiding in a bunker.

NDTV and Barkha Dutt have dredged a new abyss in chicanery and corruption. This behaviour ill behooves the recepient of a top civilian honour. Only an idiot would find Barkha and Vir's glib defence convincing. An impartial listener will be struck by the level of familiarity between Barkha and Niira Radia. Barkha is on the ball, negotiating on behalf of the Congress party. She reverts back with new information and relays it back to the congress. Trust NDTV and its cronies to use the time tested Goebbles' formula of belabouring propoganda till the public takes it to be true. The mission has already started with Ratan Tata's cryptic interview, where he seems to be saying all these exposes are bad for the country.
I salute the gumption of the editors of Open Magazine. This is the sort of reporting that makes the freedom of press something we cherish and fight for.

But, if I may suggest, for heavens' sake, do not go the Barkha Dutt or Vir Sanghvi way. For they too, once, did wax eloquent on journalistic integrity, remember?
I liked the euphemism you have used: 'lobbying'. Actually, what these breast-beating worthies - Barkha and Vir - have done is power broking. Or not to put too fine a point on it, journalistic pimping.

All this hullabaloo stemming from leaked audio tapes of telephone conversations will ultimately amount to nothing. 90% of the population of this country is functionally illiterate and hardly has any interest in any substantial issue. They are happy watching insipid movies of their celluloid heroes like Rajnikant, Shahrukh Khan and other Khans or watching Big Boss or Kaun Banega Crorepathi on the small screen. As for the rest, the age-old saying is quite valid: “Those who matter do not mind and those who mind do not matter.”
Ratan Tata would be stupid to go to the Supreme Court to stop this tamasha. That way, he will only help the embers smoulder a bit longer. Instead, he must retire for a few weeks to some distant vacation spot (like Anchorage in Alaska which is an ideal hideaway in such situations during this part of the year) where no one will even look for him and he can meditate upon whatever he wishes to meditate upon. In a few weeks, the whole thing will blow over and some other scam or scandal (in which, hopefully, his name will not be involved) will take the centre stage and grip the netizens’ imagination and attention.
At the same time, I cannot help expressing my deep sense of admiration for this woman for her facile ability to take men of all sorts in politics, busines, media, etc. for a ride and make them do her bidding. Gujarat should indeed be proud of having a bahu of such calibre since she is also credited with having played a key role in shifting the Tata Nano plant to that state from West Bengal. May her tribe increase!
Barkha imagined her to be Queen Bee amongst the journalists and considered others, including the established journalists--female or male--as mere drones. And now it comes to the light that how she developed this belief and the distance she was ready to go for this.
The media czarinas and czars must understand that they need to be like Caeser's wife need to be themselves above all possible scandels while conducing the acid tests on the others.
The exposure of tapes reveals that Barkha and many others failed to follow this dictum, as they were themselves walking on the thin ice and one day the sheet has to give way. And it happened when in politics people of kind of Nitish rose while those like Raja and Yeddy declined, and the storm took along with the wind out of likes of Barkha.

NDTV, anyway was never my first choice, not even the last. So my opinion in individual capacity wouldn’t hurt the channel commercially. However, it was not my choice because I never seriously thought that there was journalistic content in it. Look at Barkha where she is today; in an unenviable and unimaginable state of social standing; talking to Niira on one hand about what ? Whether Kani was better than that of Alagiri or of that ‘old man’ or Maran. “Oh God, what should I tell them” looks more like being worried more than Congress, leave alone any journalistic flavor in it. I don’t know what “Open” has done to my confidence level, whatever little it was of such people who hold pen like of our forefathers in the same field. To command that respect like Arun Shourie of yesteryears (not after he became BJP member), Gurumurthy (of Bofors) or for that matter M J Akbar (of ‘The Sunday’), it would require impeccable action (not just manners!). Obviously Barkha or for that matter Vir Sanghvi don’t claim enough to make us feel to respect them.
By the by, when are we going to see men like Wolf Blitzer or AC (of CNN) or Tim Sebastian(of HARDtalk, BBC then and Doha debates now) in Indian Television channels doing the programmes ?

I am so proud of the Open Magazine. Finally a media organisation that is prepared to take on the "media mafia" in India.
A proportion of the Indian media establishment is interconnected (through business and familial relationships) it has a tendency for bias in the news agenda that is set.
The same familiar faces appear in print and on 24 hour news stations. This simply has to change, no longer should the news that is reported be set by a select number of oligarchs, the people of India should not accept this and nor should the last few bastions that are the professional media organisations that have integrity.
