On a Headlines Today programme, the channel head, an enthusiastic Rahul Kanwal, is talking to Anna Hazare, Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal (a former IRS officer who is now a prominent civil society activist). As he begins discussing ‘Ab iske aage kya’ (What now after this?), he turns to Anna Hazare, and asks in Hindi, “You say that those who are corrupt should be hanged, is that not against Gandhian principles?” Anna answers, again in Hindi, “That is why I have said that, today, in many things, along with Gandhi we have to look towards Shivaji. [Unclear] Patel committed a mistake, and Shivaji had the man’s hands cut off. This policy of Chhatrapati, in many ways, we have to think about. Hundred per cent non-violence is not possible. Sometimes, even this has to be done, and that is why I have been saying that these people should be hanged…” Kiran Bedi interjects, “Anna is not taking away due process… he is going by the due process, the point is [that] economic offences today in our country are bailable, [are punished] by fines, minimum imprisonment; [there’s] no recovery of property, it is a joke.”
This is a perfect example of how the Anna Hazare movement has been operating for a while. There is little confusion about what Anna Hazare means: when he says “hang them”, he means “hang them”; when he says “cut their hands off”, he means “cut their hands off”. Kiran Bedi did interject to put a palatable spin on these words, but what she said was clearly not what Anna meant. The accompanying profile in this issue clearly shows these words are in keeping with his past. As a result of Anna’s reformist zeal, the people of his native village Ralegan Siddhi have witnessed the public flogging of those who dare to drink, a ban on all intoxicants, and restrictions on cable TV. It does not take much to see how closely this resembles the ideals of the Taliban, especially if you factor in the idea of a few hands being chopped off. Which is why it is no surprise that the sympathy he has long displayed for the Hindu Right has culminated in his endorsement of Narendra Modi.
The real surprise is that supporters of this movement see what they want to see in the man, belying all the evidence that exists. Consider those who have gathered under his banner. Among the people who shared the dais at Jantar Mantar were Medha Patkar of the Narmada Bachao Andolan and Ram Madhav of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Supporters of the movement range from Arvind Kejriwal to Baba Ramdev. Add to this Swami Agnivesh and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.
This diversity would have been acceptable if the movement was only about the Lokpal Bill. In this context, the movement would have only served to broaden the consultative aspect of the drafting of a bill. Given that the Government has already created a body called the National Advisory Council (NAC) that drafts policy, monitors government programmes and exercises almost veto powers over significant aspects of governance, the process of naming people from civil society to help draft the Lokpal Bill is hardly of consequence. The NAC is already a body filled with people who have no accountability to the electorate, but it actually exercises power over how the current Government functions.
In fact, such a focus on the Bill misses a larger point. From the very beginning, as another accompanying piece shows, the actual Bill has been a sideshow. For a large number, the Bill has become just a symbol, a precursor to the messianic hopes of cleaning up the system. In Hazare, supporters of the movement spot a figure similar to Jayaprakash Narayan (JP) who could spearhead a movement against corruption that might eject the Congress from power once again. This is an aim that is shared by not just the Hindu Right, but those who have turned out in such visible support of Anna Hazare. This ranges from the TV anchors who see TRP benefits to those of the middle-class who see this as an opportunity to effect change without entering an electoral process that they see as vitiated. In some ways, the hope is again for a movement much like JP’s that placed an assorted group of socialists and Jan Sanghis in power at the end of the Emergency. The movement had no coherence, the Government that it placed in power was a farce, and its downfall did nothing for the battle against corruption.
Fifteen years separate JP’s movement that kicked off in 1974 from VP Singh’s Jan Morcha in 1989 that brought the National Front to power. Unsurprisingly, that was another government that quickly descended into a farce. Perhaps, it is our fate as a nation that every 15 to 20 years, the middle-class will forget the farce played out by a previous generation and repeat it in its own time. Yet, the fact remains that even JP and VP Singh had to turn to the Indian electoral system for vindication, and in the end they failed because the cause they stood for was not well articulated and lacked a coherence that is necessary for a government to run effectively.
Even in their eventual failure, JP’s movement and VP Singh’s fight against corruption attracted a far wider base of people than those who were in attendance at Jantar Mantar for Hazare’s fast. So far, there is too much hype from Bollywood and the social media in this cause, and too little on the ground to back it up. But the revulsion against corruption reflected in this movement does have an echo in the country. As the 2G and a host of other scams have unfolded, it has been easy to get disgusted by how the Government and those accused have reacted. Denial and arrogance have been mixed in equal measure. Even those who played no part in the actual scam, such as the current Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal, have evoked revulsion by the sophistry they’ve brought to the defence of the Prime Minister and UPA Government. For many, this has been reason to take refuge in the very agitation Hazare promises.
But if we look at what the 2G scam shows, it is that the system has a certain resilience that asserts itself. Despite the Government working actively to cover up what happened, the coming together of a Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) who ordered the initial probe, investigating agencies that defied opposition in taking action by tapping Niira Radia’s phone (and persisting even when Ratan Tata or Mukesh Ambani were on the line), whistleblowers who made the scam public, men like Prashant Bhushan who took the case to the Judiciary, and sections of the media that risked running stories on the scam, all pulling in the same direction have ensured that such a scam cannot be wished away. It will not blow over. It is actually a sign that the system can work—it has to be helped along where possible, and in such a context, an adequate Lokpal Bill can be one more measure.
In such an environment, the need to buck the system, to insist that a way outside electoral politics is the only way, is disastrous. The authoritarian nature of the Anna movement, which has still to show that it enjoys mass support of any sort, is already obvious. It ranges from small things—such as Anupam Kher, a vociferous supporter of Hazare whose own record on Gujarat as chief of the Censor Board was at the very least questionable (impeding the release of several documentaries related to the riots), absurdly telling my co-panelist, Supreme Court lawyer Meenakshi Lekhi, while discussing this very issue on Times Now, that her body language was not celebratory enough—to much larger issues such as the insistence of this movement that only its own version of the Bill must be passed, and that Parliament should have no say on the Bill once the drafting committee has done its work. This is absurd, but it signals what lies ahead.
It is why we need to focus on the figure of Anna Hazare. The Gandhian stamp is one way to acquire public prestige in this country. The aura of a Gandhian association has long served public figures well. Part of JP’s appeal was his prominent role in the pre-1947 Quit India Movement. Of course, he was a man who well deserved his stature and it is strange having to mention him in the context of Hazare, but then the amnesia of the current generation of protestors is to blame. Vinobha Bhave, a Gandhian only in letter, was again able to attract considerable public support.
Those who argue that Gandhi has no relevance in today’s India need to focus not on the principles he espoused, but the methods he invented. The moral authority of the fast in the Indian context goes back to Gandhi, but this is not true of anyone who fasts. Hazare’s pretence to Gandhian values is a large part of his appeal. But Gandhi’s opposition to communal divides and violence are central to any Gandhian position. Hazare is no Gandhian, and if you forget appearances and concentrate on substance, adding enforced vasectomy to the list of requirements necessary for residence in his native village, Sanjay Gandhi is the only Gandhi who comes to mind in this context. The varied set of people who have come under his banner should have known this, but people have invested little or no time in studying Hazare’s past. So many are so caught up in the illusion of change, that they have been willing to forgo the truth about the man.

too much words...and highly condensed article, that is why people listen to Anna, he speaks simple...

This was an amazing article, a logical analysis of the man and the movement.
I think a similar analysis of the constitutional issues involved should also be done.
Very impressed by the independence of thought shown by the writer

Great people discuss ideas, while small ones discuss people.
this writer and his co-panelist, Meenakshi Lekhi do not see the larger picture and suddenly have started looking for the dots in the plain paper. Along with all the descriptions about Anna Hazare, I am sure that the writer would also have found lots of positive things to write about him, but has conviniently chosen to ignore.
Typical of Congress stooges. Coming from the RPG stable, what else can we expect from this magazine.
Arvind Kejriwal had rightly said on Apr 6th that now is time to be cautious about the governments evil machinery, where suddenly we would find stories and canards about various negatives in about the movement and its people. This article in one among the many that we are seeing daily.

And your point is....? So what do you suggest ; that politicians be given a free reign to loot the country until a PURE, UNBLEMISHED Hero drops from the sky for the people to rally around.
What you failed to grasp is that the middleclasses who rallied around Anna hazare were doing it for a specif cause, ie against corruption. I don't think he would have got popular support if it was for another cause, his Gandhian credentials not withstanding..
And more over i've always thought that Ghandhi too had autocratic tendencies. see the way he treated his sons and wives

I listened to you on the TV panel, but could not understand the crux of what you have so crisply written in your article above. I still find the title of Manu's previous article on Anna most apt :)
There is a danger in going down the road of cynicism but not in climbing the mountain of rationality to look at issues dispassionately.

Even if the movement appears to be tilted to the right-wing, even if Hazare appears to resemble Sanjay Gandhi, even if Modi is praised, I will look forward to a positive outcome of this movement against corruption. We can deal with the right wingers anytime. They have already been shown their place in 2004.
The Goliath of corruption requires a mutation for cure. It is foolish to expect the system to cure by itself.

So? Whats your answer to the rage which society at large (not your champagne swilling "civil society activists" who like to tell everyone what to do, Mr Bal), feels? Against the corruption which the government, and the bureaucratic and political class in general has unleashed? What is your answer to the arrogance with which they steal our money, while building ever larger police forces to suppress us? The arrogance with which they have perpetrated mass theft of the nations wealth? Do you want everyone to shut up? Would you like everyone to say, "hey, thems the rules, we cant do anything, just put up with it"? No, Mr Bal. Anna Hazare has never pretended to be what he is not. He speaks his mind. And if his views dont coincide with those of Civil Society, well, too bad. And "civil society's" response to Anna Hazare's movement has been equal parts derision, and envy. Derision, because he is not one of them. He is no limousine leftist, whose one contribution to the national wellbeing, is the construction of a fraud BRT project, by way of which crores have been stolen. No. Civil Society Activists (really just a bunch of self serving hypocrites, who milk their self appointed status to steal more public money) are also envious. Because the public at large will NEVER rally around them, like they did around Anna Hazare. Therefore, the badmouthing. Im sorry, Mr Bal. But I, for one, would much rather support Anna Hazare, than some westernised harpy at the center for science and environment, or PUCL, or any other such extended fraud on our wallets. As for the politicos and the media, well, theyre all crooks anyway. Of course they want to badmouth Anna Hazare.

Great article indeed. I think that enough people are already discussing the greatness of the man in question already. A holistic view of things - person or a phenomena can be gleaned only after reading all kinds of opinion that exist. The only pre-requisite to such an exercise being that the person that is assimilating the multitude of opinions must be aware of the source of such opinions. This leads to a more balanced and nuanced understanding of things to evolve rather than just one side of the argument/truth. Great people may discuss ideas and small ones people but smart people discuss both ideas and people.
While I don't necessarily agree with the thought process that Anna Hazare is aright wing at heart I don't particularly embrace him as the messiah either.

Hartosh, about "Patel committed a mistake, and Shivaji had the man’s hands cut off. ", the incidence was that Patil(not Patel), was in Sipeh-Salar in Shivaji's Kingdom. Patil was known for his good work, but once he raped a girl in his territory. Everybody thought he will be spared because of his good qualities but, Shivaji was strict on his rules. He cut off his hands just to show that LAW IS EQUAL TO ALL.

Thanks for the prudent article. I was waiting to read it from the time it was announced in the 'upcoming' list. I agree with the views that you presented, for the most part. Some of us who supported the movement, we were at Gateway of India, were there precisely because we feel that the jan lokpal bill can be one tool to support functioning of democracy to full potential. What we realized when we went there was that most people were unaware/ unclear about what they were supporting. You correctly point out that they went into it without knowledge. However, more often than not, people vote in the same way. Onus of spreading knowledge is on many people, but largely on the media. As usual, popular media failed the people. Gandhi did not have unanimous support, but he was the most popular. He gathered more momentum than anyone else. This will remain true for all movements. The government went on a rampage with corruption, and followed it with denial and arrogance like you point out. Once you get people to the tipping point, you cannot control their behaviour unless correct information is put out in time for people to decide. Even then, it will be assuming too much that people will make the right choices, because results are always about what people understand, not about what is being told to them. Often we notice that popular view is far from reality. Thanks again for presenting a balanced view. We look forward to the followup by OPEN on the jan lokpal bill. We hope it will be in time for people to make informed choices. It may not be so bad to have civil society participate in drafting the bill. I agree, the NAC does not have any teeth. This promises to be different. One thing I am assured of, no one hands will be cut off!

You have every right for your perception but do not forget the need of hour. You definitely have view point of most congressi shares and that is communal. You want society to be divided by right and left you cannot think of what people actually want, people want what Anna is in the process. We do not want elites like you making us communal and keep getting richer. Either we will have right wing for people or left wing for people. Enough of middle ground where 1% rich and 90% poor and confused 9% ambitious unsound mind middle class.

'There is little confusion about what Anna Hazare means: when he says “hang them”, he means “hang them”; when he says “cut their hands off”, he means “cut their hands off”.'
Really? Which secret synapse in his head did you intercept? Anna could have mentioned it in the exact context Kiran Bedi concluded - legal provision for harsher (not medieval) punishment. The talibani connection seems entirely your imposition. And while the general drift of the article is worth factoring in our stance on the Lokpal Bill, this arrogant ascribing of agendas is pretty pointless.
And just because reps from other communities chose to sit the photo ops out, does not make the movement right-wing. It would be unreasonable to conclude that they weren't involved or unwelcome.
Open's persistent, iconoclastic, critique of this one man, the company he chose to keep and his cheer-squad, is an extreme and pointless reaction. If you want to knock off this alleged halo, spare some space on the site to discuss everyone involved, and other issues concerning the Bill.

Hartosh,
Thanks for writing this post. We must entertain all sorts of perspectives in democracy.
But your article looks completely tilted against Mr. Hazare. Your post sounds more like a conspiracy theory.
In current times, if majority is worse then what's the harm in following a person who is better than worse?

Dear Mr. Hartosh Bal,
Your writings always carry an incisiveness and conviction that is evident in this article today as well. I agree with some points you have made, and disagree with some others. I wont go into those.
Merely wish to point out that you seem to have messed up on choosing the appropriate title for this article. "Spare us the Gandhian halo" - I would think that is exactly what Hazare's campaign might end up achieving - sparing us from the halo of the present day Gandhis.
Warm regards,

This somehow reminds me of a quote from the movie-V for Vendetta-,
"We are told to remember the idea, not the man, because a man can fail. He can be caught, he can be killed and forgotten, but 400 years later, an idea can still change the world. I've witnessed first hand the power of ideas, I've seen people kill in the name of them, and die defending them... but you cannot kiss an idea, cannot touch it, or hold it... ideas do not bleed, they do not feel pain, they do not love... And it is not an idea that I miss, it is a man... A man that made me remember the Fifth of November. A man that I will never forget. "
Interestingly enough, Guy Fawkes is another misunderstood figure in history.

Open Mag again proves it is very vague in its analysis. Even a novice who watched Manu joseph's open debate with Barkha Dutt could deduce that his allegations on Barkha was vague. The writer has insulted the thousands of people from within and outside India who came out in support of the movement. I dont care if Anna is a Gandhian or Shivaji sympathiser, what i can see is that he speaks sense.

Please. It's easy to be an armchair intellectual cynic like the author of this piece and find ways to question and/or criticise movements. Is the solution to wait until the perfect man (or perfect Gandhian) descends upon us like a great sav...iour and solves all our problems in the most secular and democratic way conceivable? To live with corruption, whine about it over our dinner tables and wait for divine intervention? At least Hazare is doing something. His success with RTI proves both his intentions and his integrity, even if that doesn't necessarily justify the means to the end.
I strongly get the impression that the author of this piece says a lot of these things only because he likes the sensationalism and controversy that go with such a tone. He says almost nothing about the bill itself, but happily imagines the agendas that go with Hazare's conviction. Almost none of his claims are backed with fact. It reads like an absurd conspiracy theory.
And, frankly, I'm disappointed with the poor levels of journalistic integrity in this piece.

To be fair, I think the article is too harsh on the Ralegaon achievement. Even while setting up an organisation, the first stage is chaos, when one man's word is rule. It is later that consensus and democracy - the 'auto mode - comes in.
We should be complaining if Ralegaon remains such fascist-like even after 50 years as that would show no evolution. Otherwise it is proven repeatedly by history that a group of people should really be EASED into democracy, after they are first brought up to it. You may dispute this as Talibanistic...but everything - including India's story in 1st 50 years of independence - says the same. Probably Gandhian policy was best policy when liberating India...but then there was no one to initiate Gandhian movement against new rulers when Gandhi died in 1948. And since there was ONLY one Gandhi who was deceased and hence could no more play the watchdog of this new society, democracy took its toll in early years - and power corrupted perhaps more than it does even in a despotic regime.
The main threat in that alternate (dictated state) route is the 'initial setup' controller(s) (or dictators) NOT relinquishing power even when the people are ready..and history has evidence of that too.
Even so, it would be better to have a fiascist-but-gradually-liberating Ralegaon (where people are punished publicly but for proven crimes, as you say) than having no Ralegaon at all.
I do not think we can take ANY side as easily as either the author has taken or the first commentor to this post. There will be arguments both FOR and AGAINST both..and the exact profile of people being affected will decide which IS the best solution for all.

Hartosh Ji, for the sake of giving a different view for every story, I think one should not be so desperate that he focus on one point and revolves around it in the entire article. I think you should have themed your article in "This is good, but one should take care of this while doing this" lines. I think we should appreciate Hazare Ji not only for what he stood up to, but also for taking the responsibility on his shoulders in the first place. I like your magazine and after very long time I am reading a weekly every week. Your magazine's earlier covered Talwars story and it was themed well as you showed their side of the story which no did. In this case also, you tried to do that but did a mistake by "taking" sides. Would have been great if you had shared of JP (and others) experiences and in that context warned the aam junta to be cautious. But nonetheless, you titled your article quite intelligently and aptly. I also want myself to be spared by this Gandhian Halo. Also, please take a note of one thing - Hazare Ji has not attracted this massive support because of this Gandhina Halo. He has been able to do so because of the cause. We, the helpless middle class doing their thankless jobs, are really tired of getting cheated and this the last thing in our mind i.e. to follow Hazare because he is Gandhian.

AllI can see here is the envy burning bright. The motley crew running Open magazine seem determined to make asses of themselves. First there was some forgotten worthy who accused Hindu gurus of being unconcerned about corruption unlike Christian and Muslim clerics in India. Never mind the fact that no one working in Open has the guts or anything else to write a story on the many rackets going on in the precincts of the big churches and mosques in India. While the catholic church worldwide has been shown up to be running an institutionalised child abuse racket, and similar nonsense in India is well known we won't hear a peep from Open. As for the wholesale commercialization of mosque property all over India, you won't hear anything. And then Manu Joseph made an ass of himself pooh-poohing Anna's fast, only to see that a few hours after the article appeared in print, the government accepted Anna's demands in full. And now we have Hartosh trying to besmirch Anna's character with afew things he has said? And then there is that Gujarat trope once again. Unfortunately no one in his right senses takes your allegations against Narendra Modi seriously. All they see a Chief Minister who unlike any other works tirelessly for his dtate - no flunkies, no corruption, no drama - just governance. Besides Modi is v. popular, way too popular for either journalists or wealthy socialites to make a difference.
So now all that Hartosh can do is to trot out a few trivia here and there. Get a life Hartosh.

This article is so shallow that I am surprised this got past editorial. Anna [and the key people around him like Kiran Bedi] have been able to rally millions who are absolutely disgusted with the complete lack of accountability and almost pervasive corruption - whether we agree with some of their other ideologies is much less relevant. Most people who turned up at Jantar Mantar, Azad Maidan and other places all over the country did so because they are supporting the fight against corruption, not supporting Anna per se. The author makes claims about 'system having resilience' - show me one high-profile corruption case where people have been jailed [would you say that due process was followed in each and every case and in each of these corruption cases, the charges were unsubstantiated OR would you say that investigating agencies and judiciary were either bought off or coerced or both, after all the initial media hoopla slowly died?] . Lets stop kidding ourselves - currently we have a system which can never get a conviction. Why? Because no politician or senior officer ever goes to jail despite overwhelming evidence as ACB and CBI directly come under the government. Before starting investigation or initiating prosecution in any case, they have to take permission from the same persons, against whom the case has to be investigated. No corrupt officer is dismissed from the job because Central Vigilance Commission, which is supposed to dismiss corrupt officers, is only an advisory body. Whenever it advises government to dismiss any senior corrupt officer, its advice is never implemented. No action is taken against corrupt judges because permission is required from the Chief Justice of India to even register an FIR against corrupt judges. If Lok Pal Bill gets passed, and hopefully implemented well, there would at least be some fear among these goons whose only reason to live is to loot and rape the nation, that its no longer 'business as usual' [to me the most important aspects are the time-bound nature of investigations/trial and removing the need to take anybody's permission to proceed against errant public servants].

This gentleman has a problem. He thinks the thousands who supported Anna's movement against corruption are fools. The Times Now programme he is referring to clearly showed the rigidity of Lekhi and the author of this stupid piece. We should not prejudge the outcome of this movement. This is an experiment which should be welcomed by all. Only those who have something to hide or are scared of losing their power and pelf are squeaking! These idiots have thoroughly exposed themselves by their public behaviour.

If the writer really wanted to know what is the difference between Anna and Gandhiji, he should have read their biographies. Anna is no England trained lawyer, he was not born to a family of court dewans; he was a driver in the Indian Army and owned a small lot of land. He was jailed for 3 months for alleging that a public figure had taken bribes. His simple remedy of thrashing alcoholics is not different from what is practised in rehab homes when addicts get uncontrollable. The lack of sophistication in making public statements should not be taken very seriously. He is an icon who leads a movement - he is no leader of a political party.
Anna is no foreign trained lawyer, nor is thrashing alcohol addicts unheard of in rehabilation centres---- why read him literally? He is no head of a political party ! ................... This website should put an option of whether the readers have liked an article or not, that would help the writers.

What is the author talking about. No base what so ever. Whole country is galvanized except the author. He didn't see the youth power behind this at all and completely biased and to some extent farce. So many people do fast, nothing happens. When while country wakes up that is the time government acts.
If Anna Hazare's fast would continue for 3 more days, this government will be in serious trouble. That is power of youth behind this.
Government accepted every single condition is every proof that this was true revolution.

I don’t think that we’ve to dig too much into this. For common man it is the corruption which is more important, whether it is Gandhian way or Shivaji is immaterial. Gandhi may be right at that time but not necessary for the present scenario. Of course the people surround him especially the NGO’s most of which are foreign funded, with a specific agenda which is as usual fishing in troubled waters. Bringing Gandhi into comparison is irrelevant here .What the common men wanted was a torch bearer and they got it in Anna.

I hate it when people like Hazare tried to gain credibility in th garb of words like Gandhism. His antiques might be bringing out the right issues but it is attracting the wrong kind of supporters. People like Hazare are more dangerous to a working liberal democracy than any corrupt politician. Atleast the corrupt have the decency to hide their filth. (I would request people not to take the last line at face value. I do not support corruption) Self satisfied moralists like him mutilate the system according to their own ideas of celibacy. I would much rather that educated level minded people like Kiran Bedi or Mr Kejriwal lead the protests.
Everyone who thinks that the end will justify the means can go to hell. Democracy has no end. It is a continuous process and the precedent set in this context is of prime importance. Mahatma Gandhi called off a national level movement because of the Chauri Chaura incident. He never condoned gaining independence through a hooligan mentality and I don't think we should condone the views of Hazare (as an individual) whether the end result be good or bad. The corruption has to end but I don't think Hazare has a magic potion for it.
He should take care that his "blow" against corruption does not end up creating a dent in the electoral process and any self righteous idiot does not use his example to take the government on another joyride again.

Why would you want a like/dislike button in news reporting. It is not exactly unbiased journalism if the writer's opinion is mutilated by feedback. As for your opinion, that's what the comment section is meant for.
@Everone else
Anyone who thinks that the end shall justify the means can go to hell. A democracy is a continuous process and the precedent that is set is all that matters. If Hazare doesn't have the political acumen to frame his response properly then he should refrain from saying anything at all. The words that are spoken, determine the kind of opinion and crowd that is generated and Hazare's word seem to to attracting self satisfied and self proclaimed moralists. I would much rather have well read individuals like Kiran Bedi and Mr. Kejriwal be the face of the protests, that some guy who doesn't even know what he blabbers out. Besides subverting the electoral process should be out of the question. I can't believe the Indian Govt. is giving up to Hazare's theatrics so easily. This just means that any Tom Dick and Harry will be able to take the country for a ride with a few well placed antiques.

I just love the fact that somebody somewhere is standing up against corruption and also the courage it has imparted to other people to stand against many other issues . So if we start looking at the life of the writer from start till now and we do find some flaws ( meaning he's human ) so does that mean he has no right to write an article at all ? lets not put people under microscope when they do something and relate their other deeds to the one in limelight now.

I have been an avid reader and subscriber of this magazine for more than a year now but am thoroughly disappointed by the stand taken by Hartosh Singh Bal and Manu Joseph on Anna Hazare and the demands of social activists for an unbiased Jan Lokpal Bill. Instead of this smear campaign on the individuals involved, why not try to focus on the bigger picture and hope for a better resolution of the corruption and governance issues that we as a nation face today? Instead of trashing the anti-corruption efforts undertaken by a few as inconsequential, or even steeped in self-interest, why can't the media act as a watchdog and facilitator to ensure that well-intentioned objectives are met? I was rooting for Open when the Niira Radia controversy broke out, but am not so sure of their motives and ideals any more.

Great article. Hazare movement is dangerous to liberty and freedom despite its otherwise appearance. The arguments put forward by so called "civil society" members are identical to the arguments by pak army dictators after each of their coups. It is a fact that government has failed in checking corruption and many other things. But Hazare's prescription for cure is much worse than the desease.

I was there at Jantar Mantar all the four days.. and one night also.. And I wasn't there because Anna was there.. How many Delhiites knew Anna after all? But we were all there because we all have been suffering from corruption, directly or indirectly.. and all of us want to rid ourselves and our country from this malaise! we were there to support this person who dared to rise up against it.. who has the credibility of making 7 laws by civil society participation.. who has credible people backing him.. Arvind and Kiran Bedi.. if you listen to Anna, he is a very grand father like figure.. who will talk about being morally good, living up to the ideals.. he will also talk naively that punish all the bad people.. I can expect him to come up with not just hanging the corrupt but also something like - socially boycott them.. ! He is in pursuit of the good things in life.. rather spiritual.. he isn't political.. or even politically shrewd or strategic.. just plain simple n strraight.. somebody who speaks his mind, with a gentle smile..
I actually didn't intend to praise Anna so much.. but actually discuss about Jan Lok Pal..
Just like RTI led to formation of PIOs... similarly Lokpal will lead to deputation of Public Grievance Officers.. who will then take the complaint forward of each citizen and then ensure justice in each case..
Don't we all need such a system.. Today each gov office typically has a shoddy complaint box.. but what we need a process to register our complaints and get action done !!

When did Anna said that parliament will have no final say on the bill?In fact he has said that he would accept the parliament's decision. It has become a fashion among some self-proclaimed intellectuals to debunk any sincere movement to get to lime light and show that they think some thing different. Casual remarks are taken out of context to score points. Nehru said that the corrupt should be hanged by the nearest lamp post. How much 'Talibani' he was?. All those joining or supporting Anna movement may not be so clean, so they have no right to talk about corruption. Therefore, it should be left to our 'clean' politicians alone in and out of parliament and the virtuous columnists to root out corruption.

I think this article does make a lot of sense. Their has been an inability by the BJP and other rightwing parties to realise that the average India and indeed the average Hindu DOES NOT like their brand of politics. They lost in 2004 and then lost in 2009 by a bigger margin because of their rhetoric. Now they need to reinvent themselves and move towards the centre.
Corruption is just an issue that every party in the oppostiion talks about. That is their job. They are suppose to act as a balance to the government. IF they wereNOT ablt to find any corruption, then they are NOT doing their job properly.
The investigations that have been launched in the various scams by the UPA govt. is an excample of how our system is working correctly. Compare this to China which is 10 times more corrupt than India and the people can't even publicly protest about it.

This author doesn't seem to have done his homework on the subject.. As he has mentioned it many times in this article to show the movement as Anna's own movement and he tries to implicate that this movement was Pro-Hindu as he took all Hindu names and Sadhu's names only.
Here, he forgets or I shall say that he doesn't know that Anna was added to the movement at very later stage. And this movement is supported by all religious leaders like Maulana Mahmood Madani, Archbishop Vincent despite Swami Agnivesh, Baba Ramdev & sri sri Ravishankar..
He denies the importance of this movement when he says that non-electoral system is not needed for this change.. What was he doing to make the elected people to pass a strict lokpal Bill... These kind of reporters make their bread just by criticising the people who are bringing a change for good...

Very sad that in our country Hindu bashing in the name of 'right wing' is so fashionable that any body taking up a public cause is berated simply because he praised Narendra Modi or so and so shared the dias with him. Even if Narendra Modi is getting applauds from the people including his muslim citizens, the industry, the civil society -non aligned one, the courts and the general public of whole of India, yet anybody mentioning his name is dragged to dust, simply because he runs an efficient administration - the job which he is required to do without fear or favour. I do not hold any brief for Anna Hazare or the members of his committee but the cause he is espousing is very important for the country. Well, somebody has to do it. Then why not him and why not support him for this instead of trying to find the black dots as someone has rightly pointed out.

Janlokapal Bill is like leaving the doors of our house open and staying awake all night to ensure no thieves enter the house!
Is it not a better idea to lock our House and ensure thieves have no access to the house?
Let us see what we are doing:
We are electing corrupt people as our MLA's and MPs. And we are fighting so hard to put up a body that would monitor and control their corruption!! -- This is even worse compared to our first scenario. It is like asking the thieves to sit in your house and you keeping an eye on them and stop them from looting!!
Why can't people like Anna, Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal try to replace the corrupt netas by contesting in the elections and also inspire the youth(us).
**This way, there would not be any thieves in the house and also the doors are locked**

Shri - Hartosh BalJi - One swallow does not a summer make. Similarly, just publishing the Radia tapes, does not bestow any 'corruption-fighter' moral authority on you. I believe your publishing the Radia tapes was purely voyeuristic pleasure - not exposing sleaze. Wonder if the ruling part stooges, in charge of the get-rid-of-Raja conspiracy because he refused to share the booty, recruited you too?
Of course it is a revelation that among your many skills, you also have mind reading abilities. How else would you know that when Mr. Hazare says 'hang 'em', he MEANS hang 'em"? Did you ask him whether he means it rhetorically or literally? And what's wrong if Ms. Bedi paraphrases him? Maybe she knows him better than you do? Maybe he has given her the authority? I believe you are wrong, Sir, in your surmise that Mr. Hazare wants to hang the corrupt. Why don't you simply admit that you don't know enough about the man?
But you are an honourable man, since you gave up Mathematics you didn't understand, to lionise people like Mr. Sibal who find 'no scam' in the 2G scam.
So you say that it is Mr. Hazare who flogs people in his village? Have you been to his village? Have you spoken to the people there? Did you come back-stage at Jantar Mantar and meet the people from his village and ask them why they allow Mr. Hazare to do the atrocities you claim he does? What facts do you have Sir, to back up YOUR case? In absence of such facts, you have NO RIGHT to cast aspersions on the character of a man you know NOTHING about.
You don't say what you have against Ms. Patkar or Mr. Ramdev or Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, except to use their names with disdain. Is it that they have a following that you will never have? Or is it that their followers disdain to read magazines like yours? Neither do you say why it is wrong for Mr. Hazare's movement to have their support. In the process, you have ignored the 'middle class' who for once saw a ray of hope and made their presence felt. But then I guess, for a man who couldn't understand Mathematics, to understand such complex socio-psycho equations would be asking for too much. So let's leave it at that.
By the way, did Mr. Hazare say that he is a Gandhian? Or is it you and your media colleagues who decided to bestow that label on him? And which Gandhi are you talking off? The one who shared the high table with the English while doing his law or the one who did the Dandi March? So if the original Gandhi can be accepted, warts and all, what is wrong with Mr. Hazare and HIS warts?
But again, for a man who can't understand Mathematics, how 2 + 2 can be 4, would be difficult to fathom. By the way, do you know what is the square root of -1?
Finally, you repose your faith in the resilience of the system. My bow to you Sir! Please get out of your ivory tower and come live with people like us, the 'aam aadmi'. I guarantee your faith will evaporate before you can say abracadabra. You tout the action in the 2G scam case as the system working. But you forget, the action in that case is part of the get-rid-of-Raja movement. So don't be naive.
In the end, illusion of change is at least better than hopelessness. But then, for a man who does not understand Maths, that would be over the top to understand.

Hartosh,
I have always admired the objectivity you bring into panel discussions and your writings. However, sadly in this article in your eagerness to trash Anna Hazare, where you mention about the violent streak that came out in his interview (which is un-Gandhian according to you), there were other comments from him which if taken as literally will render your further observations/analysis irrelevant. Take any personality and there will always be a dark side. Shouldn't the intent be more important and should it not be strengthened collectively. Will Anna Hazare's supposedly doubtful credentials really damage the larger cause. All your readers will hugely benefit if you can really tell how. Otherwise, this piece of writing will seem like just another character assassination attempt which doesn't behove well on your journalistic credibility.
Did it not occur to you that our largely right-wing, semi-fascist, dominantly Hindu urban middle class might actually back Mr. Hazare even more, were they to become better acquainted with "the truth about his past"? "Hang them" and "Sanjay gandhi was a doer" and "Narendra Modi is more sinned against than sinning" and "No one steals in Saudi Arabia because they cut their hands off" are opinions you can hear anytime in the well-off drawing rooms of North India ( I am not that familiar with prevailing discourse in the South and the East). Maharashtra, unfortunately, has undermined its intellectual energy with its distressing deification of Sivaji and his campaigns against the "Muslims" - and yes, it is the state where the RSS has its strong, uncontested home-base. No no, Mr. Bal, Hazare is exactly what "we" want.

Mr Hartosh,
You wrote well but, have you seen the cause behind the movement? Aam Aadmi supports the cause he does'nt know who is Anna Hazare and what has he done in his past. But he Knows why he is not able to teach hi children in good schools, why is monthly salary is always not enough, why he is not able to get medical service when he is ill, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc............................and he will support any body whether he is Anna Hazare, Osama Bin Laden or any Aira gaira Nathhu Kaira, if he is standing for the cause- Corruption.
If you really want to write good then write to help the cause. Do not discourage. I suggest write about Lok pal bill. It's pros and cons. It would be informative and believe me, You won't regret it.

Mr. Hartosh,
Instead of wasting reams of paper and time on Anna Hazare, I would really appreciate if you could come up with more such articles against the really corrupt politicians (I think you know very well who I am referring to) and how they have made a loot of the nation. I am disappointed in your article -while I am glad that you have pointed out deficiencies in Anna Hazare that the people are likely to forget in the halo that he gets, you have only mentioned negative points about Anna. Be a sport and present a balanced view on Anna Hazare -he has done good things also in his village -why not mention about that too ?
You are way too negative, cynical and dogmatic in your viewpoint. Also, have some maturity -do not use your pen to score brownie points over celebrities -it is better if you talk to Mr. Kher in person rather than use your pen to take potshots because you did not get media time or you were at a loss of words to hit back at Mr.Kher. My suggestion to you is start practising yoga and get out of the eternal brooding and listless expression that you display on national tv -the country needs optimists (and yes optimists with balanced view points), not cynics, brooding pessimists.
Come up with solutions to the problems if you can otherwise just shut up instead of criticising others and finding loopholes who are trying their best to come up with a solution.

Kudos to the writer for trying to open the eyes of the middle class Indians. What many are not trying to understand is that our country is a democratic country, where the leaders are elected by the people. This means the people can choose their own leaders and the power is in the hands of the people. But, as quoted in the Spiderman movie, "With power comes responsibility!", which none of our people or leaders will ever learn!
We already have the oppositions to check the government, JPCs to review an issue with one of the MPs and then the NAC and JVC as the writer has mentioned. So, how come another committee, comprised of the people who has the same roots as these other so called "crusaders" going to bring justice to the country?
When there are too many rules, laws, policies, people get confused. Have any of you fully understand what's in the the Terms and Agreement of Bank Loans? Or for that matter, to those who supported the recent campaign through social networks, the Terms and Agreement of any website/software? Don't joke! :-)
Perhaps, it was with a similar intention, there are too many laws, policies, committees, unions etc in this country to cast a fog on the minds and eyes of the common people.

When I first learned about 2G tapes and the journalists who I thought were responsible for exposing the nexus, I got thrilled with hope. I thought that there is scope for investigative journalism, that journalists do have resources and guts to expose the corrupt. But a passimist in me thought - how is it possible that there is not a single tape involving a particular party? How journalists and magazines can afford to make mighty politicians their enemy? If they were so powerful where were they all these days? What next they will do? But what I saw as hard evidence in form of radia tapes was not in tune with my suspicion. I thought may be in days to come I will see more action from this team. Then cane two articles from Manu and Hartosh and TV discussions. I was surprised to observe apprehensions of both. Even I was of the view that no lokpal bill can solve the problem of corruption but views of someone who have fought corruption surprised me. May be 'only clairvoyent' people know that death is evident but do they stop eating and other normal activities like all other ignorants? I became suspicious about investigative journalism. On thinking hard I came to an independent conclusion that there is little Investigative Journalism in India. I thought that what we see as IJ is just an attempts of settling score by some one. But I was not convinced with myself so I started searching. During my search I came across several things which disheartened me about this so called investigative journalism in India (just for an example read B. Raman in Sri Lanka Guardian which reads "......From one of these sources, the recorded conversations leaked out to two journals, which published the transcripts of about a hundred of them. It needs to be underlined that these tapes were not discovered by the two journals as a result of their journalistic enterprise. These were apparently given to them by an unidentified source for giving publicity to the contents. ......" http://www.srilankaguardian.org/2011/04/barkha-dutt-victim-of-media-mcca...).
Any way I have still not made up my mnd.
May be we are falling in trap laid by Anna and his team . They will become popular on our cost. They will raise their stature and we will not gain anything, not even a lokpal bill. But who knows that the other other party who is cautioning us against this trap has got similar intentions? Can we trust anyone? If not, why not go by simple gut feelings.
Hartosh and Manu, have trust in people of India. They may not be having great wisdom as two of you but they will kick out any Anna, Ramdev or ... if these activists betray people in future. People are not with Anna, they are against corruption so they will follow any one who raises voice against corruption. One Anna may be proven wrong but that will not deter people. You should be proud that the articles that you and journalist like you have written have created this awakening. So do not feel left out in this. Dont worry.
Your attempt is just like a Mom who tries to stop her daughter falling in love just because she herself ended up with broken heart. Let the new generation learn by its own mistakes. Inka dil bhi pakka hone do bhai. Girte hain shah sawar hi..... We know that Lokpal Bill is not a magic bullet. We know that breakfast will not fill our stomach for ever but we still enjoy it.
Do not feel yourself responsible for everything. No body will held you responsile if the Anna team falls short of expectations. Throw you caustion and your superman spirit for a while and concentrate on something else or alternatively try to say same thing differently that is in synch with emotions of people. We value your views. Do not think that India has started marching on Taliban way.

It is true that people of this country are frustrated with the levels of corruption. It is affecting daily life of the people. Till now several legislations have been done for for controling the corruption, but without any results. This is because of the loopholes they have. Number of cases where the accused got punished though they committed the crime are negligible. When previous legislations are not giving results, corruption level is sky rocketing and people who are involved in corruption are there on the drafting committee and trying to exclude themselves from scanner it is obvious any sane person will get irritated and may try to find out a way how to go about this. Here, Anna came up with an idea. I see there is no wrong in having members from civil society. At the end parliament will have the final authority to pass the bill or not. I wonder why media is focusing on Anna credentials instead of debating the Jan lokpal bill. There is no point in talking about Anna's character which is unrelated to corruption and comparing him with Gandhi or JP etc.
What is the whole point about? I don't see any reason for Anna Hazare to be a Gandhian, saint, hermit, to take up the cause of the Lok Janpal Bill. This whole story is not about Anna Hazare or his past or even what HE believes in, we are looking at a possible mechanism or machinery to hack at the roots of corruption, and even if not totally eradicate it (so deep rooted as it is), wound it substantially.
What I see in this article is the usual blow "under the belt" by the "political mafia" when they have lost all defensive footing, and it is appalling to see the men of the so called media lining up behind this. This stance is often also taken by lawyers to destroy the credibility of the witness to win their case. Anna Hazare may be no saint by far, but that is outside the point, why is it that the same writer has nothing to write about the people on the other side of the campaign?
The "system of corruption" is too deep-rooted for anyone to rationally expect it to be resolved in a day, but every Indian with self respect, desiring for a better India with much less corruption and growth will clearly see the need for a relentless fight against this social evil, with the same vigor with which banned "sati",

It is amazing to read such comments that serve to highlight some realities about our country which will progressively, slow down growth. give rise to more khap panchayats and vigilante groups.Because of the sheer size and diversity of our country - where majority of the population is uneducated or semi literate, there are groups that try to deepen the fault lines that exist- by misleading the people by giving them incorrect/ incomplete information to brain wash them for their political ambitions.
These are divisive politics and will only serve to further divide the country.Fighting corruption is a noble sounding cause and with free membership to this crusade people join in thinking it will make them more pious and pure - most of them do not even understand 'Lokpal,. All members of this group have their own personal ambitions and sre using this movement as a launching pad for themselves .

If the current set of politicians have a right to stand in election, bribe, win, and act as if they are ruling us, then Anna Hazare has more rights than all these jokers put together to do whatever he is attempting. I am sure you are benefitted the corrupt practices and so you write like this.

In a free country everyone has a right to have an opinion. You have stated yours. But why dont you also state your opinion on the truth about the corrupt politicians. The entire country has had enough of corruption and misgovernance. If this is one of the first step towards that, do you have an objection to that? It is not a big question on the importance of the changes to the bill, what is important is whether the current public unanimous outcry succeeds to influence the bill changes. You talk about NAC/CVC - is that stopping anyone from commiting corruption??

Of course, we cannot ban what a journalist writes. The anti-corruption movement is NOT a movement in support of Anna Hazare or to make him the Prime Minister of India. The movement is against corruption. Period. Anatomy of Anna Hazare is a non-issue. People don't need to study Anna Hazare.
I do not understand why Hartosh Singh Bal suggests the opposite.
If Anna decides not to support this movement the people who are today in the movement they will still continue to do so. Yes, Anna has a the capacity to mobilize masses. But the masses are getting mobilized because of the issue NOT because Anna is leading the movement. If Kiran Bedi decides to lead the masses will continue to support her as well.
So, Mr. Bal please focus on the issue (which is ANTI-CORRUPTION) and NOT on the man, Anna. Whether people will be hanged or flogged will come later that the Lok Pal will decide. The key is to bring everyone - including the Prime Minister's office - under the Lok Pal's purview. If that fails to deliver, the people of India will find another solution at that point.

Columnists like you always take shade in the past, be it JP movement or anything else. You forget to look at the current situation, and how it can be bettered. And when some is giving his life for a cause, you stand up and object. Why cant u object the wrong-doers? Every big cause will face resistance, even from well-educated people like you. You want all 1.2 billion people on streets? Isn't it symbolic enough to understand when thousands gather in support of eradication of corruption? We are well-informed and have gone through both the lokpal bills. If you say that the government version is in dreaming way better, then you must go to school again. You can write pages together bringing into fore the difference between Anna and Gandhi. But you forget the at least one common aspect- both fight for good cause of nation, in spite of criticism from people like you. Now everyone knows why people like Godse even existed, and continue to exist!

This is one of the least researched articles I have read on the subject. You are looking at this movement from a political angle but when you take a step back and see what this movement has achieved its a stroke of genius and needs to be applauded.
The power of people who are so sick of corruption are now asking the politicos and bureacrats for accountability to their actions and transperancy in the process. This cannot be achieved by means which are currently available such as the parliamentary process given we have seen over the past 60 years how this process gets hijacked by the select few for their own vested interests.
This piece of legislation is so powerful and that is why the powerful vested interests are looking to ways to scuttle it.RISE INIDA RISE>>>this is our movement and we shall have it!

What the hell do you know about bapu, apart from theory, do you practice his values?Ofocurse not!But you would be quick to pounce on someone who does. And why the comparison in the 1st place? Editor of 'open' is a closed minded nutjob I say.
Armchair pseudo Intellectual bull shit. Do something about the issue or shut up & let the people taking responsibility to do it. The main people behind janlokpal have devoted their lives to make India a better place, do not insult them by your 2 cents gutless defeatist attitude.
People from Ralegaon are behind anna, one doesnt need to do any research on that.
His fast has entered 6th day, just looking at him 1 knows he wants nothing his entire life is for the country, which is the least one can say about you.
People like you would have been passing the same comments during british rule, instead of taking part in the reform process.
We are not mobs, we are citizens who are fed up of the system AND we have read the bills.Even if one has not it doesnt need a MBA to know that what is right & what is not.

Spare us the "must criticize anything thats good since i am not a part of it" psuedo intellectual routine. Instead of finding faults attempt to guide anna and team with yr awakened minds. And i do hope he doesnt turn out 100% gandhian

It is really scary to see how the masses take on a movement like this. It seems they enjoy the sensation of a revolt but have not given time to reflect and think about why they are doing this.
The Bill that is being proposed by the movement is not only naive but also dangerous. The kind of people in which it plans to invest power are equally susceptible to corruption, especially because they can become so powerful.
Anna Hazare seems a very violent man indeed ! And this business about fasting is, I think, a kind of emotional blackmail - 'You do exactly as I say, or my suicide is on your head.' Gandhiji had a clear purpose in his movement. But this movement is loose canon.

really well written....

The quest is too have a strong law enforcement and deterrence system. Anna's movement is in the right direction. The goby is paying lip service. Don't we all aspire to be a democratic Singapore?
Most people are supporting Hazare becoz they are against the Govt. I agree a lot of people have spent no or little time in studying Hazare's past and what his ideologies and ideas are in reality, but the fact is that govt has messed up so royally this time that what with drafting a useless 'jokepal' bill and arresting Anna Hazare even before he began his protest, has pushed people into Anna's camp. They have themselves dug their own grave, their biggest mistake being the arrest of Anna Hazare which created a sympathy vote for him among people and enraged them at the unfairness of the act, forcing them to wonder how democracy is being challenged by the leaders themselves.
Basically, no lokpal is even reqd. You r rite, the system duz work, but for it to work better and more fficiently, we need simplification of procedures and strenghtening of already estbd institutions, which no govt is ready to do, for their own heads will be on the line then. And this is what leads to scams and corruption of various forms, which breeds discontent and desperation among people, and so then when a person like Hazare comes along, with however utopian and unpractical an idea, he is given mass support. Its all about choosing and supporting lesser of the two evils! Isn't it?
Without even knowing so much about this, Anna Hazare clearly stands out as a fake and an instrument in the hands of some high profile so called social activists, who found himself involved in such media-hyped turmoil a little too late.

It is the old question of means and ends. Repeated assertion of one's sacrifices and gun-point tactics of 'this or else' don't make a Mahatma. The danger of reliance on one person, on a redical promise to bring an end to corruption in a country of 110 crore thru JanLokPal is apparent. The present government by not moving strongly when the big scandals were getting exposed, rather relying upon a triad of personal honesty of the prime minister, watering down the collective responsibility of the cabinet and smart spokespersons, has lost its ability to project legitimacy.
Idiotic. One sided. Driven by agenda. Clear case of intellectual mastrubation. Misses the main point of what is happening. It's about the idea not the man. Have ignored details of what govt is doing and saying. I think this is paid journalism at it's worst.

ok so what if he is not gandhian.. remember gandhi also signed the death contract of bhagat singh in exchange for half independence.. was that ok to you idiots? it doesnt matter if he is gandhian or not.. and yea violence needs to be used.. i say if someone is corrupt instead of hanging them you shoot them in public in front of India gate.. to scare the other corrupt politicians and get them back on track.. using the funds of the public for ur own personal benefits is a crime of the very high order .. equal to being a terrorist in my opinion.. they both dont want the welfare of the state but rather their own cause to be promoted.. secondly have u guys even analysed the biill ? do u even know how it is to work.. just like howw most of the people are caught up in the illusion of india against corruption and know almost nothing about the 2 bills argued on... you guys are also having filled ears from the govt story of how anna's side is a dictactorship side or a parellel govt.. please have a view of how the proposed bill is to work and then talk ! here check this vid out.. read the comments.. altho its team anna side of the story.. the comments made from team anna shud help your case .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbmvRB5Wibc ..and this protest dont think of it as my way or the highway coz that was the attitude of the govt wen they asked both bills to be presented in parliament for discusion and indian govt only went on to discuss their own version and left out the other.. making another advisory body is going to be useless as suggested by the govt.. the new lokpal needs to have power !
This whole article is based on assumption that people are stupid. This is not the case. No one is relying on one person. They are hoping for the future that this new law can bring in. It is easy to point flaws but it is very difficult to provide a solution. We should start appreciating the positive work done by people instead of ignoring it. There is not harm in appreciating Modi for the good that he has done for Gujrat but that does not mean that we also approve of his role in riots.
If Anna is not there, do people know what they stand for anyway? We know everything about Gandhi by books. The change is inevitable now and someone needs to stand up and ask for it. Do you the govt will give something without asking? This article is more of a cynical English language than an analysis. Some is dying to make our lives better. The issue is that many people cannot either believe that such a huge change is too much to digest or there are other people who cannot digest the fact that Anna is doing it and has become a hero in the Indian History. Govt is not moving by a large scale motive because most of them will go to Jail and also to the people who did not understand Lokpal, it does not punish people, it only ensures that the investigation is proper(Which does not happen today due to the fact that even CBI reports to PM). Again, it is not about COngress/BJP/BSP, it is about corruption.

A great article! With convincing and logical thinking! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Post reading the article, I went through the comments and I was surprised at how misinformed people are. They still think that criticism to Anna's methods is acceptance of the depleting democracy.
I think you make a point on the issue of the man in question and the mission he has set out to achieve. The great Mahatma also talked about the means and end and emphasized that the means are as important as the end.
What upsets me is that you have chosen to make this seem a right wing movement. what you could have talked about rather than being so negative is the mission around fighting corruption. do you have any answers or formulas to reach the masses?
Indian history has proved we glorify a person rather than a mission and that is a separate issue. you have sought to break this Gandhian image that people have built around him, don't feed the media and yourself on these useless comparisons. See him as a common man in his own light. He may have thoughts about hanging the corrupt as do a lot of people - so what? Hes not bothered about an "image" that most of the media/commentators are so frenzied about dissecting
Just as you value your freedom of speech allow him his. be constructive on the mission and spare us your opinions on the man.

Can we consider the following?
I think that the real reason why there is such a massive support from people is that people are so fed up and frustrated of corruption - not high level corruption but corruption in day-to-day life. It is a common shared experience that everyone, from a mere clerk to a judge and policeman, has become corrupt in everyday life. That's what the anger is about. Anna Hazare and team are the trigger of this anger.
What is corruption? Is is not when someone is greedy and demands more than he gets? And is it not when someone abuses his/her power? But most of all, is it not that when most people around one are corrupt, one feels that is it the norm and acceptable?
I think, what this movement can achieve, at least in the short term, is that corrupt people in everyday life will fear anger from people and hence hesitate. Now there a reason to fear because the movement has gained power. People are supporting each other. I don't think that the Bill proposed by Anna and team will solve corruption in day-to-day life but the people coming together against corruption
can.
I do not see an easy solution to the problem of greed - how can one solve it other than on an individual basis?
Power has always been abused down the ages. I am sure the government has measures to put this in check but clearly it is ineffective. Imagine how powerful a group can become if even the PM is held directly accountable! Again how does one solve this problem?
Yes, I agree that it is easy to be an arm-chair critic and difficult to actually and really get involved in a big movement.
But equally, is it not dangerous to jump without thinking?
Unless of course one has jumped after a lot of deliberation ! Otherwise it would be irresponsible.

How many times have written about positive side? Sitting in a room a writting is very easy. This man has changed lives of his villagers.. so is this a religious act? He brought BJP-SENA government to its keens on corruption.. is this being communal? He has always stood for cause of public right. How many can u count out of indian politics and public figures who have devoted their own life span and serverd india. Whoever few been relanted towards joining politcs after gathering a little public support. And then they blackmail government on their own causes and if government does not allow them they are ready to pull support. This is the very common story in center and states... is that ok for you?
If there is so much public support across india for such a cause, it is a mandate. People of India made constitution and Parliament to serve them not the otherwise. But today it is very common sense for general citizen that whatever these guys sitting in parliyament and state assemblies are doing is not their concern but their own causes. Do u have any way to approach easily to file a complaint for bribe?
This is not coming out of blue - this cause has been pending for 40 long years. If current process would have been fine then this day would not have been arrived. So it is explicit that now is to time to look pariyamentry affairs as well as bill process form a different perspective...
Entire political system does not want to pass this bill because each and everybody is corrupt from tip to toe... Do you have a better gandhian idea to start changing this reality? Why today so many voices are concerned about the method of protest.. where u were when last time government diched Anna publicly. Keep you writting skill for your living causes because people like you cause damage to something positive then adding value to public life.

hahaha.... those who don't contribute to a movement, can of course sit in their chairs and criticize them!! :) LOL Everyone's missing a huge point............ we have to thank Anna for the defining change in Indian democracy............. from being a sleeping democracy to an active one.......... one where, the elected representative cannot conveniently forget the electorate for the ensuing 5 years, once they are elected; one where the largely educated and priviliged youth were disinterested, non-contributors to the democracy, into one that is a participative............ now we are seeing the beginnings of an evolution of our democracy into an 'involved' and 'participative' one.... :) where silly power brokers and arm-chair critics dont drive policy....... but the people who ensure their elected representatives act on their concerns and grievances............... :) and are held accountable!!! :) In fact, hereafter, aspiring politicians consider POLITICS a nightmare........and keep away, unless they wish to deliver to the nation!! :) that will be the best take-away from this movement.... :)

you ask young indians what they want to do to corrupt politician, 9 out of 10 would say shoot them in the head. This only shows the pent up anger and disgust against the blunt politician who are boldly looting nations money. You give them a gun and ask them to shoot i doubt if anyone would. Likewise you have to accept the the punishment and fines imposed on offenders are laughable at best they are just a rap on the knuckles nothing else. and when Anna Hazare says "cut their hands" or "hang them" it only suggests a larger punishment should be meeted out to them, then only will they defer from boldly looting public money. It doesn't mean to cut their hands in literal sense, you are just exaggerating your imagination.

Mr. Bal, this write up seems to me very skewed, as if it is meant to distort the image of Anna Hazare only, writing for the heck of writing. It justifies the saying- if you can't be something then at least spoil someone else's name.
It is amazing that you couldnot find anything good in Mr. Hazare's effort. Please ask yourself why? A 7th class pass retired army driver blew your intellectual top - is that your problem?
When a farmer commits suicide in a village, it is nothing more than a news. But if a person flogs drunk villagers , such that they do not deteriorate to a situation where they consider option of suicide to get rid off their problems - it becomes a human rights issue. Why do we consider only part of the totality as the context for explaining situations? Why do human rights issues , economic issues, developmental issues need to be considered separately ?
Consider - how many people are truely happy to see their children drinking/ smoking? What value add one can get from drinking/ smoking? Is it that it makes you modern and human rights sensitive or a self styled intellectual? State and enterprises both might make money in the process, but what does a human being get - an injured health -- what about this deliberate violation of human right to be healthy?
Well , Anna may not be the remedy for the ills, but at least he gave a kickstart to roll the ball in one direction. India and its people are intelligent enough to make appropriate directional correction whenever the need for the same will be felt. People may not say much, they might just assemble in mobs, but they experience life everyday and understand what stands where.
So let the ball roll and let Anna or anyone else be the hero of hopes. The important fact is that a beginning has been made in spite of people like us.

I wnt to point out two things
1. Anna hazare ideology may nt be gandhian n his methods too but the process of fast atleast ws gandhian n intention ws a bit authoritarian but he got ths massive support bcoz of country ravaged by inflation n scam aftr scam do you knw i read few mnths ago v ve pushed 3.5cr poor into bpl in last three years n riches r getting richer avg poor on some areas cut his daily diet by nearly 600kcal as a doc i knw tat poor already get nearly 2200 or 2400 n nw 600 less atleast 30% of populan is facing ths. So its the suffering due to poverty for lower classes n inflation wch nw has set middle class also on fire tat drove ths much support to anna.
2. For arguement shake lets agree ths ws media sponsered hypocrisy thn why didnt ths hypocrisy happen nytm evr b4 for issues othr than corruption means 77 ws for corruption 89 ws for corruption n ths is also wid same cause or thr cud b a better way v must wait till a true gandhian descend till than leave our life at continuous cycling govt none of wch is better than the othr n personally speaking i do adore non violence but does tat means evry othr person who chose violence for independence ws wrng means subhash chandra bose bhagat singh chandrashekhar azad or say in wrld washington or ho chi minh
U cn say thn anna shud nt stand himself as gandhian so wat shud anna say go people since i support hanging people u shud go n burn evrythng!!!! Shud he say ths
Means eithr a person cn b totally gandhian or he shud do nthng n spare me if i hurt nyone but personally i thnk 2nd world war deserves a bit mr of share for independence all over wrld
N at last anna is a crusader he is nt a total intellectual n blv me nevr for ny othr cause othr than corruption country ll go for revolution n v ve seen it tat how.much limited ws protests for women reservation bill the pro n anti reservation mvments the anti defection law the shabano n many mr n i cn assure u indian citizens r wise enough tat they wnt undermine democratic system for each n evry little thng m saying ths for those who thnk ths ll begin an era of dilution of democracy. No it wont.

i don't know how bad is your mathematics but your political writing is really pathetic.

What a shame that you couldn't write even a single word on saving billions of dollars lost at the hands of politics/bureaucracy.
Instead you chose to write against a man, who figured out a way to do so. If not him, then you could have spearheaded a change? At least posted an article about how many billions of tax-payers money has been drained till date?
No wonder you were poor in math, but logic? Your magazine fails me. For all practical purposes, I must feedback your company: Open up, or shut down.

Gandhian or no Gandhian, at least he has the courage to stand up for a cause and raise up his voice against the wrongs!!!

No wonder the country keeps relapsing into recuurent periods of inaction. When you have intellectuals of the country deciding to criticize every good thing that ever happens , where will the larger consensus be built upon ? Eveytime some one wants to change something, people forget the ends he is seeking and starts finding faults with every little thing he does. Nothing will be dont in a perfect manner. There will be flaws. But we have to decide the flaws we want to live by. Vivisecting rhetoric of anna Hazara and going into a psycholanalytic exercise as to whether he meant it when he said " Cut of hands" is utter nonsense. He came out and fasted. Mr Hartosh Singh sat in his comfortable room and wrote and article criticising him. thats the only difference. And this is true of the large majority of the intellgensia today. They have simply chosen to ignore the cause for which Anna is fighting and chosen to focus on slip of tongues. Is this what the country has come to now ? Agreed anna has strong views and that his onetime colleagues say he is an autocrat. So does that make him unfit to lead this campaign ? what do you want ? A jesus to come down from heaven and start fasting ? Everytime I read an article by some journalist or TV show host criticising Anna, it seems they are being paid to do so. Do you want corruption to end or not ? If you do, you have to support this movement. Because if you dont , you are back to the government and journalists and political rhetoric. Things will keep moving at the slow pace and committees will be formed and recommendations will be made and nothing will change eventually. eventually public will forget the committees and get back to their normal life cuz they cannot afford to stop earning bread. Life is too hard and we as a society have anyways got so cynical. It takes some effort to make us start hoping for a corruption free society . So when we are hoping, dont try to be this stickler for "fair" and "efficient" means and criticize methods based of your morals about whats the "correct" thing to do. We have seen where we have landed.

Anna caught the rising tide of revulsion against the Government at just the right swell. He was just the medium through which the masses voiced their disgust. In himself he or his ideas is/are nothing much to look up to (which the author wants to point out). Good though that the Government got the kick on its arrogant ass.

Very nice analysis of a useless movement! And opportunistic men around it...
TV media only wants to increase their TRP. All TV anchors & electronic media are concentrating on their career growth. They hardly care about country or it's people. They would be rich and NRIs by the time the county breaks up with civil war. But yes they would keep contributing from BBC channels :P
