Nine Fish Art Gallery presents we are all islands, a solo exhibition by Sharmistha Ray. Ray (b. 1978) is a visual artist, TED Fellow and creator of Bellevue Salons.
Comprising painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and installations, the exhibition marks a new conceptual direction for the artist. Through multi-sensory environments, Ray adapts the grammar of identity politics to express the germ of her own history, the voyage of discovery across geographies fueled in part by departures and arrivals, exile and refuge, in search of lost time, unrequited loves and the possibility of transcendence in order to examine the nature of contemporary existence.
Exposure to war, migration and coming out in her formative years provides the basis of Ray’s preoccupation with identity politics, cultural hegemonies and the nature of power. Race, ethnicity, religion, history, nationality, diaspora, sexuality and gender intersect at the crossroads in her life, producing multiple ambivalences at odds with the flat lands of globalization. Alternating notions of presence, touch, sentience and interiority throughout the exhibition, she compels us to rethink the scope of humanity by devising our own maps of subjective disorientations.
Located within the precincts of a textile mill at Byculla, Mumbai, Nine Fish Art Gallery binds together multiple art- related initiatives into one organic entity. Envisioned as part of the offering are shows that cover a gamut of media. The space is also geared to transform into a discursive hub for lectures, seminars, screenings, performances and other cultural events. Since it opened in December 2015, the gallery has hosted group shows and solo exhibitions. We are all islands is the sixth show to be presented by Nine Fish Art Gallery.
