The deadly cyclone has ravaged large parts of India’s east coast and killed 24 people. Around 80,000 huts were destroyed in Odisha and 6,500 homes were wrecked in Andhra Pradesh. Rescuers evacuated over 150,000 people in both these states. By 14 October, heavy rains touched off by the cyclone left behind a trail of destruction in many parts of Uttar Pradesh and killed 18 people. The name ‘Hudhud’ was contributed by Oman; in Arabic, it refers to the Hoopoe bird
