One-year-old Paul from Kenya relaxes in his mother’s arms at Apollo Hospital, Delhi, after a liver transplant, an unusual one where this organ was joined directly to the heart. A segment of the liver was donated by his father. Paul was suffering from biliary atresia a rare condition in which the bile ducts—which drain the bile from the liver to the intestine—are not developed. The condition can be treated if detected within two months of birth. In Paul’s case, the condition went undetected, leaving a liver transplant as the only option
