Messi in Kolkata

It’s official, Messi’s turning up. The firm Celebrity Management Group has announced that it is bringing Lionel Messi and the Argentinean team to Kolkata to play a Fifa friendly with Venezuela on 2 September. This is a coup, so we spoke to CMG to find out more about the process of bringing over the world’s best footballer. “We checked what dates the Argentina team was available and then approached the Argentinean Football Association,” says Dharamdutt Pandey, partner, CMG. “They laid down their terms and conditions, which are mainly financial and related to the quality of infrastructure. Once we came to an agreement, we looked for an opponent and signed up with Venezuela.” What is the guarantee that Messi will make the trip. “Messi’s participation is a written clause in the contract,” he says.

Earrings for Amma

Last week, a woman in Indian politics wore a new set of diamond earrings. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha, after a 14-year break, decided to wear earrings. This was forced by her fans, some of whom, in typical Tamil Nadu fashion, even threatened to immolate themselves. As a gesture of gratitude to the party workers for an emphatic victory over DMK, Jayalalitha, who has not worn jewellery for 14 years, changed her mind and complied with the request of party followers. Ironically, another woman in Tamil Nadu politics, Kanimozhi, recently had no option but to give up all her jewellery, including her favourite nose studs, after being arrested.
