Army man BC Tilak, the winner of the half-marathon in Mumbai, has not been in a battle yet. But he has had a whiff of it. “I was part of Operation Parakram and was posted in Tangdhar (J&K) some years ago,” he said, soon after winning the half marathon and a cheque for $2,000. “One night an aerial attack was expected. We were told to be ready. Our job was to engage enemy aircraft. The attack did not happen. But it was a tense night.” For the time being, though, more pleasant tasks occupy Tilak. Not only did he win his event in Mumbai, he is marrying a fellow Coorgi girl on 10 April. “She supports my sports ambitions and watched the race on TV,” he said.
