The Unified Thackeray Theory of Malaria

MUMBAI It was Ronald Ross, born in Almora, India, in 1857, who made the path-breaking discovery that the female Anopheles mosquito is responsible for the spread of malaria. Two Indians, who hate each other despite sporting the same surname, Thackeray, have now jointly put forward a brand new theory.

Two weeks ago, Uddhav Thackeray, head of the Shiv Sena, shook the foundations of medical science with his hypothesis that migrant labourers bring malaria with them to Mumbai. He then went on to ask for a check on the influx of migrants to the metropolis, a pet Sena theme for some decades now.

Last week, Uddhav’s estranged cousin, Raj Thackeray, president of the breakaway Sena unit Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, who has not agreed on a single thing that Uddhav has said since the split, seconded the theory. He too blamed migrants for the proliferation of malaria cases in Mumbai.

Men of science are yet to be convinced. “Out of the 430 species of Anopheles present, about 30 to 40 species can act as potential vector for transmitting malaria. I do not know of any other way that malaria can be caused,” says Dr Sanjay Oak, Dean of KEM Hospital in Mumbai.

According to sources, the Thackeray Theory of Malaria Spread is a direct result of the brothers not being academically very good. “The sciences were never their strong subjects. Both joined Sir J J School of Arts,” says a source.

Meanwhile, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad has demanded that Raj Thackeray be arrested for his remarks. “The whole world knows the cause of malaria is the mosquito, except Raj Thackeray,” he said. “How can migrants cause malaria?” It’s a good question, even if it comes from Lalu.

Curious Case of Suicides in AP
Does anybody really believe that people are ready to die for their politicians?

Does anybody really believe that people are ready to die for their politicians?

On 31 July, Eshan Reddy, a student of Osmania University, immolated himself on campus. He was making good his word to Goddess Maisamma. He had promised her that if all the 12 legislators who had resigned for a separate Telangana state were re-elected in by-elections, he would sacrifice himself. In his suicide note, he called the Congress candidates ‘traitors’. He also expressed the wish that his body be taken in a procession to the Telangana martyrs’ memorial near the Assembly.

We have heard of people committing suicide in despair when their gods don’t hear their prayers, but killing yourself because what you wanted came true is a new one. But then, Andhra Pradesh is a peculiar state when it comes to people eager to give up their lives for their politicians. Last year, reports said that 67 people died of shock or committed suicide on hearing of the death of YSR Reddy in a helicopter crash. His son, Jagan Mohan, had to request followers to desist from dying. Less than a month ago, three people killed themselves when Chandrababu Naidu and his group courted arrest in Maharashtra over a border dam issue.

But all such numbers and deaths are suspect. Take the death of K Srinivasa Rao, a 47-year-old vegetable vendor, one of the three who died on behalf of Naidu. A local media report had one TDP leader elaborating on how Rao died: “He kept shouting against the cops for the ill-treatment meted out to his leader. He consumed liquor and collapsed on the road.” It sounds like a drunken man suffering a heart attack.

In India, committing suicide is seen as anything but a sign of mental illness. The law considers it a crime, wily politicians turn it into an act of martyrhood, and the media swallows it as drama. People like Arun Pathak of Varanasi have made a career out of threatening to commit suicide as a form of protest. He has cut his veins, consumed Valium, jumped into the Ganges with a rock tied to him. He is now a politician protected by bodyguards.

The Telangana Joint Action Committee claims that around 300 youth have committed suicide for the separate state. That number is probably not true, but what is beyond doubt is that Telangana would be better served with live supporters than dead ones.

weighty issues
Rude and Fat

Fat, a stigmatising word, faded out of the spoken world when political correctness dawned. Fat people were called large size or termed clinically as obese. Britain’s public health minister, Anne Milton, now wants a label-swap to motivate thinning. She believes calling people fat, rather than obese, will push them to lose weight. UK is home to the largest number of obese citizens in Europe. Milton says people perceive obesity as a health issue. Being fat is “a worrisome personal issue”, where people will take personal responsibility.

violence
Just Beat It

The Rahul Mahajan wife-beating drama playing out on television and in newspapers is especially embarrassing for his sister Poonam Mahajan, who’s been working assiduously to implement women’s empowerment programmes in Maharashtra. Rahul’s recent assault on wife Dimpy is not the first time he’s been accused of domestic violence. His first wife Shweta, too, displayed her bruises in public before divorcing him. Poonam, who has been vocal about domestic violence, has been silent when it comes to her brother. Her only comment was a rather cryptic statement that she is not in touch with the couple and that women should be treated with dignity.

Wealth Has a Gender

It doesn’t matter how wealthy you are, there will always be gender discrimination. A global study by the Boston Consulting Group has highlighted how a majority of wealthy women feel they get second-class treatment at the hands of financial advisors as compared to men. About $20 trillion, or 27 per cent of global wealth, is owned by women, but that has not helped change this mindset. The study cautions wealth managers to take a nuanced approach towards women clients.

Where Unauthorised Gods Dwell

Tamil Nadu is the blessed land of unauthorised religious structures on public land. According to a list submitted by all Indian states to the Supreme Court, this state had the maximum number. A bench headed by Justices Dalveer Bhandari and Deepak Verma had asked state chief secretaries to submit details of illegal religious structures in parks and on streets. Tamil Nadu had 77,453 structures. It was followed closely by Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Sikkim, Mizoram and Nagaland, though, reported none.

PURITY
Halal Cosmetics

Britain will soon be getting its first range of halal cosmetics. Created by entrepreneur Samina Akhter, this new brand of make-up products will be free of alcohol and pork fat. The idea came to Akhter when she realised that existing products contained fatty acids and gelatin made from pig fat. As a devout Muslim, she found it worrying. Her Samina Pure Makeup range of products are made from plant extracts, minerals, essential oils and vitamins.

BAN
Porn Unfreed

After the fiasco over Savita Bhabhi, the illustrated porn website that got banned, the Maharashtra government is threatening another round of censorship, this time a blanket one. Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe announced in the Legislative Council that the government was considering a ban on porn sites. This comes in the light of an Army officer caught uploading clippings of child pornography. The state machinery says it has started a clampdown, with night patrolling of cyber cafes and police training on cyber crimes.
