Jammu & Kashmir has become the only state in India to have a floating post office.
Jammu & Kashmir has become the only state in India to have a floating post office. Located within a huge house boat, it also boasts of a philately museum, post shop and a mail delivery system. “There are other places in the world with floating post offices, but I don’t think any of them have the added attractions of a museum and shop,” says John Samuel, Chief Post Master General, Jammu & Kashmir. Docked in the Dal Lake, this novel post office was inaugurated on Monday, 22 August. Tourists can look forward to buying Kashmiri handicrafts from the gift shop and then having them mailed to any destination within India or abroad. “People can even buy coffee table books about Kashmir or learn more about the history of the Indian postal department.”
