If Oprah Winfrey has you convinced that over-eating is the effect of unresolved emotional issues, you may have to recalibrate your thoughts on the subject. Recently, researchers at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Maryland, USA, found that with change of microbiota (different species of micro-organisms that live inside a healthy body) in the stomach, lab-bred rats deficient in a particular gene started over-eating and became obese. But once the rats’ systems were cleaned of the ‘obese microbiota’, their eating behaviour returned to normal. Here’s another reason for a stomach purge.
