Raj Thackeray, this may not make for happy reading. Bengalis are making a push for their tongue to be recognised as an official UN language. This will make Bengali the seventh official language of the UN, after English, French, Chinese, Spanish, Russian and Arabic.
The West Bengal Assembly recently passed a resolution backing the Bangladesh parliament’s call for Bengali as an official UN language. In September, Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina herself argued for the language’s recognition at the UN General Assembly. The Bengal government has now asked the Centre to take up the issue.
