The women of Darfur presented a strong front when more than 200 of them met in Al-Fashir on 23-24 May to discuss solutions for peace. Many expressed strong support for President Omar Al-Bashir, recently indicted by the ICC for ‘war crimes’. They described him as a man of the people, who had done much to integrate women into government. The summit was organised jointly by the Sudanese Women’s General Union and Sudan International University and supported by the British Muslim Initiative led by Lord Nazir Ahmed. “We all know that for some, war has become an industry and we know that peace missions have become political tourism for some organisations and Hollywood stars,” Ahmed said. There were passionate speeches on ethnic cleansing, violence against women and distortion of Sudan’s image by the Western media.
