Mad Soy Disease

We all know about mad cow disease. In Brazil, an affliction that specifically strikes GM crops has been dubbed ‘Mad Soy Disease.’ Spreading from the hot north to the more temperate south, the disease damages standing crops and causes a massive 40 per cent yield loss, says a report by Dr Man-Wan Ho from London’s Institute of Science in Society. With no cure in sight, things don’t look too bright for GM soy, which accounts for almost 80 per cent of Brazil’s total soya crop. That’s a thought to sow in mind as we contemplate BT brinjal. n PNP
