Ancient medicines mentioned in the classical texts of Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Yoga will soon be patented in five international languages. Minister of State for Health and Family Affairs S Gandhiselvan has told the Lok Sabha that all medicinal formulations in ancient texts are being transcribed in English, French, German, Spanish and Japanese for patent applications. “As of October 2009, we have transcribed over 82,600 formulations of Ayurveda and 1,12,500 Unani medicines,” says Dr VK Gupta of Traditional Knowledge Digital Library, which was formed along with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology and Department of Ayush.
