Computers and mobile phones are all set to make their debut in the Census of India data. The 2011 Census will include the two electronic items in the list of ‘household assets’. It will, however, only record how many houses have mobiles and computers and not the number of these assets. So far, the ‘Assets Available’ list has included radio/transistor, TV, telephone, bicycle, scooter/motor cycle/moped, car/jeep/van. According to the 2001 Census, 66.2 million households or 34.5 per cent, did not own any of the above assets. But the inclusion of mobiles might just change that number by a wide margin.
