Tamil Makes Court Debut

Tamil pulled of another victory, this time over English, more than half a century after it locked horns with Hindi over its imposition on the people of Tamil Nadu. Last week, lawyers of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court argued their cases in Tamil. While legal sanction for Tamil as official court language is hanging fire since 2007, when the state Assembly passed a resolution to that effect, the lawyers of the Madurai Bench seem to have decided to speed things up. They called for an indefinite fast. A day later, the judges allowed lawyers to carry on proceedings in Tamil. Easier to argue in the mother tongue, is it?
