There’s a gap in the list of Booker winners for the year 1970, an anomaly now being corrected with the Lost Man Booker Prize.
There’s a gap in the list of Booker winners for the year 1970. When the Prize was instituted in 1969, it was awarded to a book published a year previously. From 1971, it started going to a book published the same year. So novels published in 1970 were swept aside, an anomaly now being corrected with the Lost Man Booker Prize. The longlist includes Fireflies by VS Naipaul’s brother Shiva Naipaul, A Fairly Honourable Defeat by Iris Murdoch, A Guilty Thing Surprised by Ruth Rendell and The Driver’s Seat by Muriel Spark. The shorlist will be decided by March this year, after which people can vote for the winner on the Man Booker Prize website.
