Tropics in Decline

It is places that are hot, bright and crowded where the earth’s natural resources are the most ravaged. The WWF’s alarming Living Planet Report shows that biodiversity in the tropics has decreased by 60 per cent in the last 40 years. The global loss in the same period is 30 per cent. “Biodiversity loss is in low income countries, while the developed world is living in a false paradise fuelled by excessive consumption,” says Jim Leape, Director General of WWF International. We’re reaching perilously close to the edge. “Based on current consumption trends, it would take 4.5 Earths to support a global population living like an average resident of the UAE or US,” says Leape.
