Out of the 1382 Acts recommended for repeal by the committee, only 415 have been repealed so far
Certain laws in India are so old that they are as good as dead. The march of technology has rendered most British-era laws rudderless. Repealing such laws requires identifying them. Various efforts to do so have not met with much success so far. Therefore, the latest initiative by the Modi Government—which has vowed to fast-track reforms—to set up a committee to weed them out will ensure smoother governance.
The new panel is expected to submit its report in three months and on the basis of its recommendations a bill will be introduced in Parliament in the Winter Session, a PMO statement said. ‘The newly constituted Committee will examine all Acts recommended to be repealed by the Committee on Review of Administrative Laws which had been appointed by AB Vajpayee government in 1998,’ it added. Modi had expressed concern that out of the 1382 Acts recommended for repeal by the committee, only 415 have been repealed so far.
