The clergy of the famous Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad have imposed a dress code for women visitors. A set of burkhas are now kept at the entrance and handed out to the liberally dressed, including foreigners with skin showing in “inappropriate” places. Of course, those choosing to wear the outfit don’t have to cover their faces or heads.

The dress code was imposed as the custodians of the mosque were fed up with non-Muslim women walking in wearing jeans, shorts and tank tops. Imam Maulana Alhaj Abdullah Quraishi Al-Azhari says there is nothing new about the enforced dress code. “One should not enter the mosque bare-bodied. You have to cover your body and exposing it in a place of worship is a sin.” The majestic 400-year-old mosque is open to tourists except during prayer hours.

Incidentally, it was the clergy here that issued a fatwa against Sania Mirza for shooting an ad-film on the premises wearing a short skirt and top. Sania later apologised for hurting religious sentiments.
