The Kerala government seems to think that cinematic dance leads to sexual exploitation. It has been banned across all schools in the state, though the Department of Education has received no such a complaint in writing so far. “Classrooms are used for dance practice; there are agencies that exploit children and parents by giving them false promises of offering opportunities in films and reality shows,” says Mohamed Haneesh, director of public instruc­tion. The order was issued on 1 August with immediate effect, covering 15,000 schools across the state. “It is vulgar,” explains Haneesh, on being asked why cinematic dance should not be allowed in schools.
