As the sun sinks down over 2010, Lake Pulicat in Tamil Nadu has just been declared the threatened lake of the year by the Global Nature Fund. This posting comes after the livelihoods of 50,000 fisherpeople and the homes of Greater flamingoes, Spot-billed pelicans and Painted storks were found to be at the brink. Siltation, sandbar formation and prawn farming in this lush lagoon are threatening the ecological balance of Pulicat, one of our largest living lakes.
