It is ironic that a movement which has made so much noise about holding a referendum on the Jan Lokpal Bill, a referendum that has no sanction or validity under the Constitution, has so much trouble with a referendum in Kashmir. Surely, whatever an individual’s stand on the issue, it is reasonable to expect that we live in a republic where such issues can be voiced and debated openly. In this context, the Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena (the very name is an insult to Bhagat Singh) is contemptible but unimportant. What is far more shocking is the amplification of the same view by Anna and his sidekick Arvind Kejriwal, who more and more reflect the same fascist bent of mind that drives the RSS.
Prashant Bhushan’s statement on Kashmir was made weeks before he was assaulted. In fact, his stand on Kashmir was clear well before the Anna movement was conceived. Why did it take an attack on Bhushan, by people who were certainly once directly allied with the Sangh and are today part of it in spirit, for Anna to suddenly attack such views in public? How has this man given to so much vagueness while replying to every pointed question suddenly found such clarity? It is only because the viewpoint that Anna and by extension Kejriwal represent is the same simplistic and ill-thought-out rightwing nationalism of the Sangh which has no space for the Constitution or the liberal values it embodies. In that sense, when Anna’s team stands and shouts “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, it is not hailing the Indian Republic but a mythic nation that exists only in the mind. It was no coincidence that the very stage on which Anna first fasted at Jantar Mantar had a map of India shaped in the image of Bharat Mata as the backdrop. It is no coincidence that Anna is a teetotaler given to flogging young men who do not obey him. It is no coincidence that Kejriwal has often shared the stage with an anti-reservation organisation called Youth for Equality. It is no coincidence that the electioneering they are doing is not directed against corruption but the Congress (even if the distinction is sometimes hard to make, it exists). It is no coincidence that Constitutional issues are so readily dismissed by Anna and Kejriwal, who has even anointed Anna above Parliament. It is no coincidence that through the Jan Lokpal Bill, they imagine an ombudsman who would be to the republic what Anna is to Ralegan Siddhi, someone who will whip us all into shape.
Through the twentieth century, this combination—a claim to efficient governance, a mythic father or motherland, a contempt for a certain section of people—has been the mark of fascism. Surprisingly, many of the Left, such as Bhushan himself, have been slow to recognise this. The news that two members of the core committee of Anna’s team, Rajendra Singh and PV Rajagopal, have resigned is no surprise; what is a surprise is that they were part of the committee to begin with, perhaps they were taken in by the rhetoric that is always so seductive to the Left, ‘we must be with the people’. The support extended by the RSS, the overt expressions of sympathy, the covert mobilisation of numbers, the desire to make common cause with Anna, is not some public play at deception and politics, it is the manifestation of a genuine desire to make common cause with a man who has managed to fulfill their aims. Mobilise the people, corner the Congress, and fight to the death for Kashmir (only rhetorically, of course, for in reality the soldiers who die in the fighting are motivated by a far more prosaic professionalism). This only leaves the question of how long people like Medha Patkar and Prashant Bhushan will survive as part of Anna’s team. Patkar is calling for a repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). Everyone knows where Anna will stand on that one, but perhaps his views will become public only once some other organisation sympathetic to the Sangh attacks Patkar. But this is now only a matter of detail. The personal compromises that a Bhushan or a Patkar have had to make with their own views is up to them , what counts is that the attack on Bhushan has opened up the faultlines within the movement and exposed the delusions of those who joined it in the name of ‘liberal’ values.
This does not mean the movement is petering out. The Winter Session of Parliament will see a Lokpal Bill being adopted, but it is unlikely that in its details it will contain all that Anna and Kejriwal have demanded. There will be another fast, there will be more tamasha and television, but what should have been a means of channelling an anger directed against a corrupt government is now turning into a force that the RSS is only bound to welcome.

Prashant Bhushan has a right, like all of us, to hold certain beliefs. If the Team Anna's sole agenda is fighting corruption, then it should not matter to them what some team members beliefs are in other matters, like Kashmir, right to recall, mining in tribal area, female foeticide, Formula 1 racing in a poor country or FDI in retail. Anna Hazare has little patience with certain things, and his burning down of desi hooch thekas or beating up people who drink/smoke, is proof of that. There are enough clear signs of a Hindutva influenced thinking, some pointed out by Mr. Bal. There is no problem if Anna has RSS leaning; of course he can be transparent about it instead of parading a few non-Hindus on stage. More than his affinity to RSS type thinking, I find his dictatorial tendencies far more dangerous. If saying referendum in Kashmir be done is treason/ sedition, a promise made by Nehru to the world community, then telling the Indian Parliament "either pass MY bill in this session, OR ELSE" is equally reprehensible.

I think Hartosh Sighji, with due respects, your comments are extremely harsh and biased against a movement. Generally journalist take every moveemnt lead by people as a positive catalysts of change, however your views come tilted in favour of the ruling party more than the interest of a nation.
Imagine if BJP was in power and this movement driven by Anna or lead by congress, you might have made Anna/congress a hero.
Further I would like your views on how did you jump to conclusion that Bhagat singh kranti sena is an insult to Bhagat singh or the slogan Bharat mata ki jai is only for some imaginary nation and not Indian Republic, what would you say National anthem is for some imaginary or a real nation, how would you define that nation and its anthem. A Nation is for its people, and people just like Ram its people will also have defects, differences, views and solutions to same sets of problems, but the most important aspect is the intent. So what if the movement got its support from RSS as long as it is an indian organsation supported by normal indian republic, how do you know that Congress is not supported by Wahabis, western or some external elements.
you rightly said Team anna had mother India's pictuure on the stage (as such I dont find anything wrong with that), but to avoid any contradictions they replaced it with Ghandhi's picture and so on, you will find many corrections over pitty issues which some journalists are expert in making a mountain out of mole. There might be differences over other issues (non corruption related) in Team Anna which don't you think is a good thing in free India, but I truly hope they will come together in defeating congress, corruption and inffeciency they have built over decades.
I will NEVER VOTE for CONGRESS untill its last minister goes behind bar.

Amazingly enough, if the RSS politically mobilizes hindus, the likes of Bal have an issue and call it fascism. If the Church, Mullahs all convert Hindus, or attack their way of life, the likes of Bal will see it as plurality. The sheer breathtaking hypocrisy practised by the likes of Hartosh is what is driving increasing support for the RSS. The ordinary Hindus see the Congress et al cynically manipulating the minorities for votes and then you have the holier than thou Bals call the RSS etc names for standing up for Hindus and their rights. Keep barking & all you'll achieve is more support for the RSS. And long overdue at that. I & many other moderate, middle of the path Hindus now no longer believe in the farce that India's so called secularism is & the idiotic ad hominem attacks on the RSS made by the left leaning journalists who think that their beliefs are the only ones that matter. If anything, the left leaning media is fascist. They cannot stand the fact that a RSS exists & is popular.

Very well-said Akash. People like Bal are as great a threat to the country as Islamic terrorists. Shame on them.

Very well written article! Anna Hazare and Kejriwal's movement certainly has ulterior motives but the real concern is the kind of comments this article has attracted. Those who support RSS and take offence against anything said against it should do all Indians a favour - please ask RSS to come out with their real agenda - that they do not believe in the constitution and that all minorities (not muslims alone) should be treated the same way as those in Gujrat 2002 onwards. It will really make things clearer for everyone once the masks are off! With regards to the "transparent" Anna Hazare, why doesn't he accept that at Ramlila maidan it was the RSS crowd which was giving him "urja"? why does no news channel ask him the question that how can he claim to be a Gandhian when he has resorted to beating up youngsters for drinking? What makes him think that only Kejriwal's version of Lok Pal Bill should be passed with all "three" clauses and nothing else? Sad part is, in the name of anti-congressism we will again have the RSS middle class thronging Ramlila maidan in the name of anit-corruption while Yediurappa will keep hopping from Astrologers to hospitals to jail.

Thank God people like Hartosh Singh Bal exist even today-kudos to him for writing this article.Ofourse there will be diehard Anna and RSS fans who see nothing beyond their narrow limited agenda.
If the RSS is gaining ground with its propoganda-thats fine by me but I shudder to think what would happen if a Hitler like situation developed in our country. This could easily happen if people are not watchful or if more and more middle of the road, moderate Hindus get carried away by the RSS anti Congress and anti Muslim/Christian rhetoric.
Also it is Ok when Westerners convert to Hinduism but not okay when Hindus convert to another religion.Live and let live.

Salute to Hartosh's courage. This is the fact that so called team Anna was a hired group of people to make atmosphere in favour of BJP/RSS....but very few have courage to accept this fact.

I've been a fan of Open Magazine for the way it presents any issue in a lucid language, irrespective of the prominent/authoritative interpretations available at the time. Guys like Bal, Manu, Gandhi et al have done a good job of preserving journalism. But of late the inclination of the magazine have become more and more pronounced and this article only reinforces that. There could be a thing or two that we may not be knowing about Anna or the movement and I will highly appreciate Team Open to shed some light on the reasons that have made you a staunch anti- Annaiite. What this article and all other previous articles have presented can be best termed as inferences, source data of which I'm not aware.

@Beamer, please don't come up with ridiculous claims. Hindus are not converting foreigners en masse or seeking to. Organizations like ISKON are still at the fringes of mainstream Hinduism in terms of popularity and their foreign reach. Most Hindu organizations are local and exist for retention of cultural roots not outward propagation. In contrast, missionaries actively target Hindus for conversion, mocking their belief system. The end result is justifiable outrage. Guys like you & the likes of Bal will keep parroting live and let live but the average Hindu is fed up. And thanks for proving Godwins theorem about invoking Hitler. When Hindus get burnt alive on a train - oh thats fine. But if they retaliate and a riot occurs, because the minority "loses", that becomes a pogrom and Hitler gets called out. How hypocritical and stupid can you all be. This shameful behaviour is what makes the RSS an increasingly viable alternative to the pander to the minority extremists while assailing the majority whenever possible, sort of behaviour.
That a 70+ old is campaigning for a noble cause is not of worth to Hartosh. What matters to him is the "Sangh", the proverbial Hindu bogeyman. And to claim because the violence reflected the Sangh. If the RSS was half as violent as its critics claim it to be, then the likes of Bal would never have been too afraid to make such claims. The RSS demonization is just a myth in order to make the minorities vote for the usual INC-regional party nexus. Apparently suffering one Pakistan via divide and rule was not enough. Now our brown sahibs want to replicate the process indulged in by our colonial masters by dividing the population via their scare mongering.
