The sparrow has a new saviour in Mohammed Dilawar, a Nasik-based naturalist. One of  Time’s Heroes of the Environment, 2008, he has now been asked by the Indian Government to gather data on the urban sparrow population, its habitat and factors affecting its breeding.  “This is a landmark survey as there is no data about common birds in India. They are not considered glamorous enough by conservationists and so are ignored in favour of the tiger and more exotic animals,” he says.
